BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bobcats were swept, falling to the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors in three sets at Brookings High School on Tuesday night.
Brookings coach Erinn Thomas was disappointed with her team’s intensity in the match, especially in the defensive end where the No. 5 Warriors took advantage and found the empty spots in the court.
“We didn’t play with a lot of intensity, especially on the defensive end,” Thomas said. “Washington did a nice job of finding openings on our court with a lot of different shots that our defense just wasn’t able to pick up.”
The Bobcats looked good early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. But Washington responded with a 12-3 run that gave the Warriors a 13-9 lead. The Bobcats remained competitive through the opener but Washington pulled away late for a 25-22 victory.
The second set was even in the early moments as both teams were tied at 8-8 but the Warriors scored five straight points to jump ahead 13-8. From there, Brookings had trouble with the serve-receive as Washington recorded seven of their 16 aces in the second set on the way to a 25-13 win.
“They served tough at us,” Thomas said of the Warriors’ performance from the service line. “They pushed us to the endline, sideline and short with a lot of great float serves and we weren’t able to make a great read on them. The four-and-five-point serving runs really hurt us tonight.”
The Warriors put the finishing touches on the match with a 9-3 run to open the third set and a 25-17 victory.
Rylee Thompson had six kills while Kymber Buys and Macy Even had four kills each for the Bobcats.
Kamryn Streich had 10 assists and Buys had seven assists.
The Bobcats had two aces with Even and Streich each recording an ace.
Even and Morgan Norgaard each had 11 digs for Brookings. Rylee Thompson had a solo block and a block assist, Burns had two block assists and Even had a block assist.
After falling to 10-10 with the loss, Thomas is looking forward to a day of practice before heading out to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Thursday and hosting Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Oct. 22 before competing in the East/West Tournament in Spearfish from Oct. 25-26.
