SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split a pair of games on Tuesday night.
The Bombers lost to Sioux Falls East 9-4, but then bounced back with a 9-3 win over Mitchell. Brookings is now 8-9 and plays in a tournament in Rapid City beginning on Thursday.
The Bombers were unable to score until the fifth inning and that led to the loss in the first game of the night.
Sioux Falls East led 4-0 after two innings. They scored a run on an error in the first inning. Then a run from a passed ball and a sacrifice fly made it 3-0. An RBI single pushed the lead to 4-0.
RBI singles in both the third and the fourth made it 6-0. Brookings then got on the board in the top of the fifth.
Brady Nutter hit an RBI double that scored Ty Johnson. Cooper Drawdy then walked with the bases loaded and Hayden Jones hit Dario McSweeney home with a single to make it 6-4.
Sioux Falls East answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back RBI doubles made it 8-4 and then an RBI single made the final 9-4.
The Bombers had five hits in the loss. Jones was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Drawdy and Nutter were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Johnson and Mason Burzlaff were each 1-for-2.
McSweeney pitched the first two innings for the Bombers. He gave up five runs, two earned, on four hits with six walks and no strikeouts. Jones pitched an inning and a third and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and four walks. Nutter pitched the final inning and a third and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Brookings jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three innings and cruised to a victory in its second game of the night.
The Bombers led 4-0 at the end of the first. Burzlaff hit McSweeeney home with a double and then he and Drawdy scored on a double from Jones. Ty Delbridge then hit Jones home with a single to make it 4-0.
Brookings scored two in the second and they both came on an error. Another run on an error in the third made it 7-0.
Mitchell then scored two runs on an error in the top of the fourth to make it 9-2. Brookings got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning as Johnson hit Delbridge and Jones Huntimer home with a single. An RBI single from Mitchell in the top of the sixth made the final 9-3.
Brookings had six hits. Jones and Jonhson were each 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Burzlaff was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Drawdy and Nutter were each 1-for-3.
Grayson Wagner pitched the first four innings and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Mason Burghardt pitched the final three innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.
