Bombers Black splits two games in Renner

RENNER – The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split a doubleheader with Renner on Wednesday afternoon.

Renner took game one 4-3 and then the Bombers bounced back with a 12-2 win in four innings in game two. Brookings is now 9-14-1 and will play a doubleheader at Marshall (Minnesota) on Monday at 5 p.m.

Game One 

Renner 4, Brookings 3

Brookings trailed 4-1 entering the sixth inning and scored two runs but was unable to complete the comeback in game one.

Renner scored two runs in the second to break a 0-0 tie. They scored their runs on a single and a ground out.

Brookings cut the lead in half in the top of the third as Mason Burzlaff hit Dario McSweeney home with a single.

Renner scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. The run in the fourth came on a wild pitch and the one in the fifth was from a single to make it 4-1.

Ty Delbridge hit a one-out single in the top of the sixth and Burzlaff scored. McSweeney also came home on the play as there was an error. Brookings went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh to make the final 4-3.

The Bombers had five hits in the loss. Delbridge was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Burzlaff was 1-for-2 with an RBI. McSweeney was 2-for-3 and Mason Burghardt was 1-for-3.

Drawdy pitched all six innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two

Brookings 12, Renner 2 (4 inn.)

The Bombers scored 10 of their runs in the first two innings and then kept Renner from cutting the lead under 10 in the bottom of the fourth.

Brookings led 6-1 at the end of the first. McSweeney scored on an error for the first run of the game and then Hayden Jones was walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Drawdy scored on a fielder’s choice from Jones Huntimer and Delbridge came home on a wild pitch. Huntimer scored on an error by the catcher and then Ty Johnson hit Grayson Wagner home with a single to make 6-0. Renner’s run in the bottom of the inning came on an error.

The Bombers stretched the lead to 10-1 in the top of the second. Delbridge scored on a wild pitch and then Jones stole home. Huntimer came home on an error by the catcher and Wagner  scored on a Carter Nielsen ground out to make it a nine-run game.

Jones came to the plate with Drawdy and Delbridge on base in the third and he hit both runners home with a double to push the lead to 12-1. Renner scored a run on an error in the bottom of the fourth but was unable to score any more runs and the Bombers won via the 10-run rule.

Brookings had four hits and drew 13 walks. Jones was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Huntimer and Nielsen each had an RBI without a hit. Delbridge was 1-for-1 and McSweeney was 1-for-3. 

Burzlaff pitched all four innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
