PIERRE – The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team went 1-2 in a tournament in Pierre over the weekend.
The Bombers lost 14-0 to Pierre 13U on Friday and then beat the Sioux Falls East 13U on Saturday 9-4. In the final game of the weekend Brookings lost to Mitchell 13U 14-4.
Brookings is now 1-5 on the season and plays Baltic on Tuesday.
Friday
Pierre 14, Brookings 0
The Bombers were unable to get a hit and the game ended in three innings.
Pierre scored seven runs in the first inning. The first run of the game came on an RBI single and then a two-run single made it 3-0. Then a steal of home and a run from an error pushed the lead to 5-0. The final two runs of the inning came on an inside the park home run.
Pierre extended its lead to 11-0 in the second. Runs came home on an error and a passed ball to make it 9-0. Another run scored on a passed ball and someone came home on a wild pitch to make it an 11-run game.
The final three runs of the game for Pierre came on a bases-clearing triple in the third.
Shinji Numata pitched the first two innings for Brookings and gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks. Logan Schaar pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Saturday
Brookings 9, Sioux Falls East 4
Brookings scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie and that led to its lone win of the tournament.
The Bombers led 2-0 after the first inning. Kale Weiker hit Schaar home with a triple and then he scored on a passed ball.
SF East tied the game in the top of the second. The first run scored on a passed ball and then a run on a wild pitch made it 2-2.
Brookings regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Noah Hamann hit a single to hit Jess Johnson home and then a sacrifice fly from Brayden Brintnall scored Hamann and made it 4-2.
Pierre scored a run on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth and then tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI double.
Numata scored on a wild pitch to give Brookings the lead again in the bottom of the fifth. Weiker scored on a steal of home and Johnson then hit an RBI single to make it 7-5. The Bombers scored another run on a fielder’s choice and then a balk from the pitcher scored Hamann to make the final 9-4.
Brookings had seven hits. Johnson was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Hamann was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Weiker was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Schaar and Teagan Wallace were each 1-for-3.
Sunday
Mitchell 14, Brookings 4
Mitchell scored in all four innings and that led to the 10-run loss for the Bombers.
Mitchell scored four runs in each of the first two innings. The first run of the game came from a single and then three-straight bases-loaded walks made it 4-0.
A two-run single in the second made it 6-0. Another bases-loaded walk and another RBI single pushed the lead to 8-0.
Brookings scored three runs in the top of the third. Schaar hit Collin Andrew home with a single and then Brintnall stole home to make it 8-2. A fielder’s choice from Johnson scored Schaar and that made it 8-3.
Mitchell responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. All three runs came on an error, making it 11-3 heading into the fourth.
Hamann stole home in the top of the fourth to make it 11-4. However, Mitchell scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game. Two RBI singles made it 13-4 and then a run from an error ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
The Bombers had five hits in the loss. Schaar was 1-for-2 with an rBI and Brintnall was 2-for-2. Hamann was 1-for-1 and Anderw was 1-for-2. Johnson had an RBI without a hit.
Schaar pitched the first inning and a third for Brookings. He gave up eight runs, seven earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Johnson pitched two innings and gave up six runs, two earned, on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks.
