Bombers Red beats Yankton, but falls short at state tournament

The Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team earned a win over Yankton on Friday but dropped its last two games to Pierre and MAG as they finished its season at the State Tournament.

Bombers Red beats Yankton, but falls short at state tournament

Brookings finishes year with 29-17 record

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team earned a win over Yankton on Friday but dropped its last two games to Pierre and MAG as they finished its season at the state tournament.

Brookings finished the season with a record of 29-17.

Friday

Brookings 13, Yankton 2

The Bombers bats got going early, scoring 10 times in the bottom of the first inning in a 13-2 win over Yankton on Friday.

Yankton took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning but the Bombers loaded the bases in the bottom half when Dario McSweeney was hit by a pitch, Mason Burzlaff singled and Cooper Drawdy drew a walk. The Bombers got a run on an error in the next at-bat before Burzlaff scored on a wild pitch to take the lead.

Jennings Huntimer walked to load the bases again and Hayden Jones scored on a passed ball before Ty Johnson was hit by a pitch to refill the bases. Mason Burghardt singled to drive in a run and put Brookings ahead 4-1 and Brady Nutter’s bases-loaded walk made it a 5-1 game.

Burzlaff drove in a run with a single later in the inning and the final four runs scored on a pair of errors to give Brookings a 10-1 lead.

Ty Delbridge tripled to lead off the bottom of the second inning and scored on a Burghardt single to make it an 11-1 game and a two-run double by Delbridge capped the scoring for the Bombers, who won by the 10-run rule in the fourth inning. 

Jasper Pitts tossed a complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Brookings had six hits. Delbridge went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Burghardt went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Burzlaff went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Saturday

Pierre 10, Brookings 0

Brookings couldn’t get much going, being held to one hit in a 10-0 loss to Pierre on Saturday. Pierre scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning to win the game via the 10-run rule.

Grayson Wagner started the game, allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Jones allowed four earned runs on one hit and five walks in one inning out of the bullpen.

McSweeney had the lone hit for Brookings, going 1-for-2 in the game. Huntimer also drew a walk for the Bombers.

Sunday

MAG 10, Brookings 5

The Bombers wrapped up the tournament with a loss to MAG on Sunday morning.

Brookings took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Burzlaff drew a one-out walk and scored on a Drawdy double. Jones singled in the next at-bat to double the Bombers’ lead but MAG scored twice in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2.

McSweeney started another rally with his leadoff walk in the top of the third and stole second base and advanced to third on a Drawdy single to score on Jones’s single to put the Bombers back on top.

Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third inning to give Brookings a 4-2 lead but MAG scored six runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning and added two more runs on an error to take a 10-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Huntimer drew the final run of the season on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning.

Delbridge started for Brookings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings. McSweeney allowed two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Drawdy went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Jones went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Burzlaff went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Nutter went 1-for-3.
