BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team was swept in a doubleheader against Renner at Bob Shelden Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bombers lost the first game 15-0 in three innings and then fell in game two. Brookings is now 6-15 and will play a doubleheader at Yankton on Monday at 12 p.m.
Game One
Renner 15, Brookings 0 (4 inn.)
The Bombers only recorded two hits and the game ended due to the 15-run rule.
Renner scored one run in the first inning on a single. They then struck for six runs in the second.
The first two runs of the second came from wild pitches and then an RBI double made it 4-0. Another double brought in two more runs and then a run from a ground out stretched the lead to 7-0.
Renner would then score eight runs in the fourth. The first came from a bases-loaded walk and then two more runs from wild pitches made it 10-0. Two additional runs came home from bases-loaded walks and then a two-run single made it 14-0. The final run of the inning came on another RBI single.
Cullen Torgrude was walked to lead off the inning and then John Romsa was hit by a pitch with two outs and Weston Diers followed with a single to load the bases up. However, Mason Hegerfeld then flew out to center field to end the game.
Diers and Hegerfeld were each 1-for-2.
Game Two
Renner 18, Brookings 9
The Bombers hung with Renner for three innings in game two before Renner pulled away.
Brookings got its offense going early as the Bombers pushed across five runs in the bottom of the first. Elias Wagner scored on a wild pitch and then Owen Rounds came home on a Diers ground out to make it 2-0. Romsa scored on a Tegan Jensen single and Hegerfeld came home on a Jax Sonnenburg single to make it 4-0. The final run of the inning was Jensen scoring on a Cade Jaacks single.
Renner scored three runs in the top of the third. They scored runs from a double and a triple and then a run from a wild pitch cut the lead to 5-3.
Sonnenburg hit Jensen and Bennett Porter home with a double in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3 heading into the fourth.
Renner would then cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. They scored runs on an RBI double and an error to make it 7-5. That’s when Renner seized control of the game with 11 runs in the top of the fifth.
Runs from a wild pitch and two singles gave Renner an 8-7 lead. Then a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and another run from a single made it 10-7. A two-run double and RBI single stretched the lead to 13-7. A run would come home on a ground out and two more runs scored on an error to extend the lead to 16-7.
Diers hit a lead-off triple in the bottom of the inning and scored on the play as the third baseman made an error but that was the only run of the inning for the Bombers. A two-run double in the top of the sixth made it 18-8 and then the Bombers scored a run on an RBI single from Rounds but were unable to score any more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brookings had 12 hits. Sonnenburg was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Rounds was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jensen and Jaacks were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Diers was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Hegerfeld was 2-for-3 and Wagner was 1-for-4.
