BRANDON — The Brookings Bombers White 13/14U baseball team wrapped up its season, winning one of three games at the state tournament at First National Bank Field last weekend.
The Bombers finished the season with a record of 5-24.
The Bombers had a strong day at the plate but couldn’t keep up as they lost to Sioux Falls 17-7 in their first game of the tournament.
Sioux Falls scored twice in the first inning before Delton Brownell and Mack Nelson drew walks to lead off the bottom of the first. Brownell stole third base and scored on a throwing error but Brookings couldn’t scratch together another run.
The missed opportunity allowed Sioux Falls to create some separation, scoring three times in the top of the second inning and once in the top of the third. Jonathan Lacher-Starace’s single started a rally in the bottom of the third and he stole second base before advancing to third base on an error and scoring on a double steal.
Sioux Falls added four runs in the top of the fourth but Brookings scored another run in the bottom half. Nelson singled before stealing second and third base and scoring on an error.
Sioux Falls added two more runs to go ahead 12-3 before Brookings had its biggest inning in the bottom of the fifth.
Lacher-Starace led off with a walk and advanced to second base on defensive indifference and third base on a wild pitch before scoring on an error. Jaxson Neuharth also reached on the error before Hudson Vincent was hit by a pitch. Waylon Carroll lined out and Aiden Adelmann struck out for the first two outs of the inning but an error allowed Neuharth to score and Nelson hit a two-run double for the Bombers' final runs of the game.
Sioux Falls finished the game by scoring five times in the top of the fifth inning.
Kuddyer Baugher started for Brookings, allowing 12 runs (five earned) on 14 hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings. Lincoln Damm pitched the sixth, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk.
Nelson went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, two stolen bases, a run scored and two RBI. Lacher-Starace went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Adelmann went 1-for-3 with a triple. Damm went 1-for-1.
Delton Brownell drew two walks and stole two bases. Jonas Murray also stole a base and drew two walks.
The Bombers rallied for their lone win of the tournament, defeating Spearfish 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Spearfish scored a run in the top of the first inning but Brownell led off with a walk and scored on an error to tie the game in the bottom of the first. A four-run second inning gave the Teeners some breathing room but Brownell singled and scored on Nelson’s RBI double to cut the lead down to 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Neuharth walked and stole second base before advancing to third base and scoring on a Carroll groundout. Spearfish got a run back on a single in the top of the fifth inning but Brookings closed the gap with a three-run sixth inning.
Teagan Wallace scored as a courtesy runner on a wild pitch to begin the rally before Hudson was hit by a pitch and Baugher drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Neuharth scored a run on a passed ball before Bode TeKrony scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 6-6.
Spearfish scored two runs on an error in the top of the seventh inning to break the tie but with the courtesy runner on second base, Edelman drew a walk. Brownell singled to drive in a run before both runners moved up a base on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Lacher-Starace. Nelson drew a two-out walk before Murray drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game at 8-8.
That set the stage for the bottom of the eighth inning when Neuharth began as the courtesy runner, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to win the game.
Nelson started the game, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts over six innings. Baugher pitched 0.2 innings, allowing an earned run on one hit and a walk. Carroll pitched the final 0.2 innings, walking two batters and striking out one.
The Bombers had five hits in the game including three from Nelson. Nelson went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk. Brownell went 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI. Neuharth and Lincoln Mosley also had stolen bases in the win.
Sioux Falls started Sunday’s game with seven runs in the first inning but Brownell led off with a single, stole second base and scored on Murray’s triple to cut the lead to 7-1.
Sioux Falls scored four runs in the top of the second inning and three runs in the top of the third inning but Brookings scratched together another run when Lacher-Starace singled, stole second base, advanced to third base on a balk and scored on a Nelson single.
Sioux Falls scored three more runs in the top of the fourth and won the game via the 10-run rule.
Brownell started for Brookings, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits and a walk. Murray allowed three earned runs on two walks. Vincent allowed three earned runs on one hit and three walks in 1.1 innings. Adelmann got the final two outs with a pair of strikeouts.
Brookings had five hits. Brownell went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Lacher-Starace went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base. Nelson went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base. Murray went 1-for-1 with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Vincent went 1-for-2 with a double.
