BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bombers White 13/14U team swept a doubleheader with the Dell Rapids 14U team on Wednesday night at Mickelson Middle School.
Brookings won each game by one run, taking game one 6-5 and game two 7-6. The Bombers are now 15-5 and will play and will host a doubleheader with Aberdeen on Monday at 12 p.m.
Game One
Brookings 6, Dell Rapids 5
Brookings held off Dell Rapids in the sixth inning of game one to earn the win.
Dell Rapids took a 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Their first inning came from a fielder’s choice and then a sacrifice fly gave them a two-run lead.
The Bombers tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lucas Kahler hit Hayden Smidt home with a sacrifice fly and then Kuddyer Baugher came home on a double from Derek Jordan to make it 2-2.
Brookings took the lead in the bottom of the second when Warner Carroll hit Lincoln Damm home with a single. Dell Rapids regained the lead with a two-run single in the top of the third.
The Bombers would get the lead back in the bottom of the third. Delton Brownell put the ball in play and then an error by the shortstop pushed Baugher and Kahler across the plate to make it 5-4 heading into the fourth.
Smidt hit Jaxson Neuharth home with a single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-4. Dell Rapids scored a run on a ground out in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5. They had two runners on with two outs but Baugher struck out the batter to end the game.
Brookings had seven hits. Kahler was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Smidt was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jordan and Carroll were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Damm and Baugher were each 1-for-2.
Brownell pitched the first five innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Kahler got two outs in the sixth and gave up an unearned run and a hit with two walks. Baugher got the final out with a strikeout.
Game Two
Brookings 7, Dell Rapids 6
Gavin Streich scored the winning run for Brookings in the fifth inning of game two.
Dell Rapids scored two runs again in the top of the first. The first came from an RBI double and then a balk from the pitcher scored the second run.
Brookings answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Landon Mosley hit Baugher home with a single and then Brownell scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Beau Thompson would then score on a wild pitch as well to make it 3-2 heading into the second.
Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the third when a run came home on a double play. They then took a 5-3 lead when two runs came home on a single in the top of the fourth.
Brookings regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Mosley hit Brownell home with a single and then he and Thompson each scored on a Damm ground out to make it 6-5.
Dell Rapids scored on a single in the top of the fifth before Brookings won the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Bombers had three hits. Mosley was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Jordan was 1-for-1. Damm had two RBIs without a hit.
Thompson pitched the first two innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Smidt pitched the next two innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Baugher pitched the fifth inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout.
