The Brookings softball team lost a high scoring affair to Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday night as the Cavaliers came away with a 16-13 victory in Sioux Falls.

Brookings Bobcats fall to Jefferson in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings softball team lost a high scoring affair to Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday night as the Cavaliers came away with a 16-13 victory in Sioux Falls.

Jefferson jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first inning. Brookings got on the board first as Kylie Moe hit a home run to center field. The first two runs of the game for the Cavaliers came on an error. They then hit an RBI triple and RBI single. The final run of the inning came on an error.

Morgan Norgaard hit a home run to lead off the third inning. Moe followed that with a single and she scored on a ground out to make it 6-3.

Jefferson then hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to four. Brookings answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. All four of the runs in the fourth came with two outs. Megan Wadsworth hit a double and Norgaard followed with a walk. Wadsworth scored on a single from Moe and Norgaard scored on an error. Moe then scored on an error and Kymber Buys hit an RBI double to make it 7-7 heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Cavaliers answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. They hit an RBI single and followed that with a two-run home run to make it 10-7. They then hit an RBI double and the final run of the inning came on a fielder’s choice.

However, Brookings answered with five runs of its own in the top of the fifth. K Cushing walked to start the inning and she scored on a single from Moe. Norgaard walked and she and Moe scored on an error to make it 12-10. Kelsey Grendler then came to the plate with the bases loaded and she hit a double that sent home Buys and Q Kurtenbach, making it 12-12.

Jefferson scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came from a ground out and the second one came from an error, making it 14-12 heading into the sixth.

Norgaard hit a home run to right field in the sixth, but that was the only run the Bobcats were able to produce in that inning. Jefferson then stretched the lead to 16-13 in the bottom of the inning as the Cavaliers hit an RBI single and then the second run of the inning came from an error. Brookings went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

Moe went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Norgaard went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Grendler was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Buys, Wadsworth and Sydney Bebensee each went 1-for-4.

Moe started the game for the Bobcats and she only pitched one inning. She gave up six unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Tess Burns pitched five innings and gave up 10 runs, seven earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

Brookings is now 3-3 on the season and plays at Mitchell on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
