Brookings Bobcats sweep Huron at Bob Shelden Field

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bobcats baseball team got two strong pitching outings and lively bats in the nitecap to sweep a doubleheader with the Huron Tigers at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday night.

After a pitcher’s duel in the opener, the Bobcats bats got hot after dark and they downed Huron 11-1 in six innings.

“We’re a pretty new lineup for a varsity team, and it just seems like that’s the way it will go for us for a while — when we hit, we all hit, and when we don’t, someone’s gotta step up for us,” Brookings coach Carter Roach said.

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the first, but Brookings promptly tied it in the bottom of the frame and never trailed again.

Jase Bauer went the distance on the hill, allowing just the one earned run while walking two and striking out four.

“Jase is one of our leaders, and that was actually his first start of the year, so to see him go out there and settle in and cruise like that was huge for us,” Roach said.

Catcher Maxten Jensen led the Bobcat offense, collecting three hits — including a triple — with four RBI and two runs scored. Tre Christopherson, Talon Hyde and Tyson Antonen had a pair of hits each, with Hyde and Christopherson collecting a pair of runs batted in each.

“Total team effort at the plate, it was good to see, and then Maxten, good to see him have that kind of night, especially catching both ends of doubleheader like he did,” Roach said.

All told, Brookings pounded out 14 hits to get Huron back on the bus early.

The Bobcats got a strong outing by starting pitcher Noah Lease, a big RBI double from cleanup man Winston Plummer and four clutch outs from Talon Hyde out of the bullpen to win the opener over Huron, 3-1.

Plummer had the game’s biggest hit when he crushed a 2-strike, 2-out, 2-on pitch nearly over the centerfield wall to the deepest part of Bob Shelden Field. Antonen and Cooper Schneider scampered around to score on the play and Brookings took a 3-0 lead.

“That was huge for us. Winston had two good at bats where he worked a walk both times, and then he smokes that ball for the double,” Roach said.

Lease allowed some baserunners early, but settled in and was in command through the middle innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out five over 5 and 2/3 innings of work.

“For a kid, that was his first varsity start. He’s thrown a lot of innings coming up, but for him to go out like that and pitch like he did, was incredible,” Roach said.

Lease appeared to have six shutout innings in the books but just missed his sixth strikeout to close the sixth inning. Lease got a grounder on the next pitch but the 6-3 play went past the first baseman and the Tigers closed to within 3-1.

But Hyde closed the door, getting four straight outs, including a strikeout on a nasty straight change to end the sixth with a runner in scoring position.

“We’re just getting Talon back pitching from being a little banged up, and he’s been really good for us in relief,” Roach said.

Brookings got on the board first in the bottom of the second, when designated hitter Tane Friedrich singled to left and Plummer came around to score.

In addition to his two RBI and run scored, Plummer added a pair of walks.

Antonen and Maxten Jensen had the other hits in the opener for the Bobcats.
