WATERTOWN — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Watertown on Friday night.
The Bombers outscored the Black Sox 30-2 in the two games as they won game one 18-1 and game two 12-1. Brookings finished the regular season with a record of 40-8. They’ll open up the state tournament on Thursday in Watertown with another game against Watertown. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and then the Bombers will play Yankton on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Rapid City Post 22 on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Brookings had nine hits as a team and also drew 11 walks in the game one victory.
The Bombers led 10-1 through the first two innings. Ben Schulte hit a one-out single in the first and then came home on a Nolan Krogman single. Dixon Dauer then hit a two-run double to push the lead to 3-0 heading into the second.
Jude Meendering walked with one out in the second and scored on a wild pitch. Baker Hanson then scored on a wild pitch as well and Krogman scored on a steal of home to make it 6-0. Dauer then hit an RBI single and Andrew Heinze walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-0. Meendering was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Schulte was walked to extend the lead to 10-0. Watertown’s lone run of the game came from a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second.
Brookings scored five more runs in the third. Dauer hit an RBI single and Noah Lease scored on an error to make it 12-1. Dauer came home on a ground out from Lincoln Helmbolt and Garrett Wipf followed with a two-run home run to make it 15-1.
The Bombers scored their final three runs in the fourth. Hanson scored on an error and Kooper Henderson hit an RBI single. Wipf then hit a sacrifice fly to score Eli Ellsworth to make it 18-1.
Dauer went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Wipf went 1-for-1 with three RBIs. Henderson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Krogman was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Schulte was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Lease was 2-for-3. Meendering, Helmbolt and Heinze all had an RBI without a hit.
Hanson pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings led 4-1 after the first inning and didn’t look back as the Bombers secured the doubleheader sweep. Meendering and Jace Jaacks walked to begin the game. Meendering then stole home to score and Jaacks scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-0. Both Hanson and Krogman scored on a Dauer ground out to make it 4-0. Watertown’s only run of the game came on a triple and the batter scored on an error on the throw.
Brookings added three runs in the second. Wipf reached on an error to lead off the inning and Meendering followed with a double. Hanson then hit both runners home with a double to make it 6-1. Lease then hit an RBI single to make it 7-1 heading into the third.
The Bombers extended the lead to 12-1 in the fifth. Heinze was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Helmbolt followed with a walk. Heinze scored on a double and Helmbolt scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-1. Jaacks scored on a wild pitch as well and Hanson came home on an error to make it 11-1. Mason Diers was then walked with the bases loaded to score the final run of the game for the Bombers.
Brookings had nine hits. Lease was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hanson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Krogman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Meendering was 2-for-2. Schulte was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Wipf was 1-for-2. Dauer had two RBIs without a hit and Andrew Hove had an RBI without a hit.
Lease pitched all five innings for the Bombers. He gave up one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
