SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bullets 16U team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Monday night.
The Bullets lost both games as they fell 14-5 in game one and 13-4 in game two. Brookings finished the regular season with a record of 4-34-1.
Up next, the Bullets will travel to Rapid City for the 16U State Tournament. Brookings will take on Mitchell on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Rapid City Post 320 on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Bullets final game of pool play will be against Watertown on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Sioux Falls scored 12 runs in the final inning to get the win in game one.
Brookings got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second. Rylan Hesser reached on an error with one out and made his way to third on a ground out from Wes Van Ede. He then scored on a passed ball and Brennan Cordes walked. Cordes then scored on a Camden Reicks single to make it 2-0.
Sioux Falls cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a run of a steal of home. They then tied the game with an RBI double in the third.
The Bullets regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Parker Witte hit a two-out single and then stole second. He came home on a Parker Nielsen single and Nielsen then scored on a Connor Jones double to make it 4-2. A bases-loaded walk from Witte in the top of the fifth pushed the lead to 5-2.
A two-run double from Sioux Falls East in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to one. A run from an error and an RBI single gave them a 6-5 lead. Another RBI single, two hit batters with the bases loaded and a run from an error made it 10-5. Another run from an error and a three-run triple made the final 14-5.
Brookings had eight hits in the loss. Witte was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nielsen was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Reicks was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cordes and Sutton Schneider were each 1-for-2 and Tate Sonnenburg was 1-for-3.
Schneider pitched the first three innings for the Bullets. He gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Jones pitched an inning and gave up five runs on one hit with one strikeout and three walks. Nielsen pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up seven runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout.
Nine runs in the fourth inning was the difference in game two for Sioux Falls.
Brookings trailed 4-2 at the end of the first. Jones and Sonnenberg each singled to lead off the game. Jones scored on a ground out from Hesser and Van Ede hit Sonnenburg home with a single. Two RBI singles and a two-run single gave Sioux Falls a two-run lead going into the second.
The Bullets scored a run in the top of the second. Witte hit a single to lead off the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Jones. Witte then led off the fourth with a walk and scored on a double from Sonnenburg to tie the game.
A bases-loaded walk gave Sioux Falls the lead again in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly and a two-run single put them up 8-4 and then a wild pitch and two runs from an error made it 11-4. An RBI single and a batter being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded pushed the lead to 13-4. Brookings had one base runner in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score any runs.
The Bullets had six hits. Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Witte and Cordes were each 1-for-2 as well. Sonnenburg was 2-for-3 and Van Ede was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hesser had an RBI without a hit.
Hesser pitched the first three innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Cordes pitched the final inning and gave up six earned runs on two hits with six walks.
