Brookings Chutes split doubleheader against Sioux Falls West

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes split a pair of games against Sioux Falls West on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

The Chutes won a tight first game 5-3 and then lost 11-1 in five innings in the second game. Brookings is now 20-10 and will host a doubleheader against Aberdeen on Friday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 5, Sioux Falls West 3

Two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie and the Chutes kept Sioux Falls West off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the win.

Brookings led 2-0 after the second inning as they scored both runs in the second. Talon Hyde led off the inning with a single and Nolan Wagner drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Tane Friedrich then singled to load the bases up and Hyde scored on a passed ball. Wagner then came home on a ground out from Max Jensen to put the Chutes up 2-0.

Sioux Falls West tied the game in the top of the fourth. They led off the inning with a single followed by a double. The first run came in on a ground out and then an RBI double tied the game.

The Chutes regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jay Harris reached on an error to begin the inning and made his way to third on a Friedrich single. He then scored on a Jensen sacrifice bunt to make it 3-2. SF West hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth to tie the game back up.

Gavin Hammrich was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the inning and then stole second. He then came home on a single from Hyde and Hyde made his way to third on the throw. Hyde scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 5-3 heading into the sixth and Will Conrad retired the final six batters in order to get the win.

Brookings had five hits. Hyde was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Friedrich was 2-for-3 and Tre Christopherson was 1-for-3. Jensen had two RBIs without a hit.

Conrad pitched a complete game. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits and had two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Sioux Falls West 11, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)

SF West scored in four out of the five innings and made quick work of the Chutes in game two.

Neither team scored in the first inning and SF West broke through with three runs in the top of the second. Three singles loaded the bases with one out and an error scored the first run of the inning. Then a bases loaded walk scored the second and the third one came on a wild pitch.

Brookings scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second. Hammrich led off the inning with a double and then scored on a single from Conrad.

SF West pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third. They scored a run on a fielder’s choice and a run on a steal of home. An RBI single and an RBI double in the fourth extended the lead to 7-1. Then another run on a ground out made it 8-1 heading into the fifth.

SF West scored runs on a wild pitch and a steal of home in the fifth. Then an RBI double gave them a 10-run lead. Christopherson reached on an error for the Chutes in the bottom of the inning but they were unable to score a run and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

The Chutes had just three hits. Conrad was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Hammrich was 1-for-2. Nolan Wagner pitched the first four innings and gave up eight runs, six earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and four walks. Hammrich pitched the final inning and gave up three earned runs on one hit with a strikeout and two walks.
