Brookings Chutes sweep Sioux Falls West

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Chutes swept a junior legion baseball doubleheader against Sioux Falls West on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won game one 8-4 and then took game two 15-5 in six innings. The Chutes are now 11-6 and will play a doubleheader with Brandon Valley on Wednesday night in Brookings starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 8, SF West 4

The Chutes kept SF West off the scoreboard for all but one inning in game one and that led to the win.

Brookings scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jude Meendering scored on an error and then Baker Hanson hit Noah Lease home with a single to make it 2-0.

The Chutes scored another run in the bottom of the third when Meendering scored on a Lease ground out.

SF West took the lead in the top of the fourth. They scored a run on a ground out and then an RBI single and an RBI double tied the game. A run from a passed ball made it 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Brookings got all four runs back in the bottom of the inning. Nolan Krogman and Lease each walked with the bases loaded to give the Chutes the lead. Then Hanson hit Krogman home with a single and Meendering came home on an error to make it 7-4.

The Chutes scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Meendering scored on a Lease ground out. That made the final 8-4.

Brookings had six hits. Hanson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Meendering was 1-for-2. Tate Sonnenburg and Connor Jones were each 1-for-3. Lease had three RBIs without a hit and Schulte and Krogman each had an RBI as well.

Andrew Heinze pitched the first four and two thirds innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Hanson pitched the final two and a third innings and gave up no runs and two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 15, SF West 5 (6 inn.)

Brookings scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined and that led to the 10-run victory in game two.

Each team scored three runs in the first inning. SF West’s runs all came from a double in the top of the first. Krogman scored on a Lease single and then Sonnenburg and Sutton Schneider were each walked with the bases loaded to tie the game.

Brookings scored six runs in the bottom of the second. Krogman came home on a Meendering single and then Hanson and Lease each scored on a Schulte single to make it 6-3.

SF West cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the fourth. Each run scored on a ground out.

The Chutes pushed the lead back to three in the bottom of the inning. Lease went home on a Schulte double and then Schulte later scored on a steal of home to make it 8-5.

Brookings scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Parker Witte scored on a Krogman double and then he and Meendering each scored on an error to make it 11-5. Lease came home on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 12-5.

The Chutes ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. The first run of the inning came home on a bases-loaded walk from Lease. Then a sacrifice fly from Hanson scored Jones and a single from Schulte pushed Krogman across to win the game via the 10-run rule.

Brookings had 11 hits in the big win. Schulte was 3-for-5 with four RBIS and Lease was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Krogman was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Hanson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Meendering was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Jones was 1-for-1. Sonnenburg and Schneider each had an RBI without a hit.

Meendering pitched five innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Jones pitched the final inning and gave up no runs or hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
