Brookings Cubs get 10-run win over Volga Cormorants in home opener

The Brookings Cubs improved to 2-0 on Wednesday night as they beat the Volga Cormorants 14-4 in seven innings in their first game at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings Cubs get 10-run win over Volga Cormorants in home opener

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Cubs improved to 2-0 on Wednesday night as they beat the Volga Cormorants 14-4 in seven innings in their first game at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings led 6-0 after the first four innings and then a six-run sixth inning put the game away.

The Cubs pushed two home in the first inning. Isaac Bonner and Chase McDaniel hit back-to-back singles with one out. Noah Buss then came to the plate with two outs and drove one over the right fielder’s head. The ball bounced over the fence and both Bonner and McDaniel scored.

The Cubs added two more runs in the third inning. McDaniel led off the inning with a double. He then made his way to third after tagging up and then Noah Puetz had an error that allowed him to score on the play. Myles Rees then reached on an error with two outs and made his way to second on a wild pitch. Parker Winghart then drove Rees home on a triple to make it 4-0.

Brookings scored another two runs in the fourth. Zach Shastay reached on an error to start the inning and then Logan Anderson walked. Henry Hammrich hit a single to load the bases and Bonner then walked to score a run. McDaniel then hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-0.

Volga would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth. Jordan Kathol walked to begin the inning and then Austin Pillsbury reached on an error. Kathol scored on a Jake Steffensen single and then Connor Gross hit a two-run single to make it 6-3.

Brookings extended the lead to 12-3 in the sixth. Bonner drew a walk to start the bottom of the inning and then came home on a McDaniel single. Rhett Zelinsky followed with a walk and then both runners scored on an error to make it 9-3. Justin Cofell hit an RBI single and Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly. Henry Hammrich then hit an RBI single to make it 12-3 heading into the seventh.

Damien Danzeisen drew a walk with one out for the ‘Rants in the top of the seventh. He then scored on a Steffenson single to make it 12-4.

The Cubs then scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game. McDaniel walked to start the inning and Zeklinsky followed with a double. Nolan Miles then hit both runners home to make the final 14-4.

Brookings had 12 hits as a team. McDaniel was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Miles was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Buss was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Parker Winghart was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Bonner was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hammrich was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cofell and Anderson were each 1-for-1 with an RBI. Zelinsky was 1-for-3.

The Cormorants had three hits. Steffenson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Gross was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Hammrich got the start on the mound for the Cubs. He pitched five innings and gave up three unearned runs and two hits with 13 strikeouts and five walks. Lincoln Vasgaard pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Cubs will have a week off before playing Elkton on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Brookings.
