Brookings Cubs wrap up regular season with loss to Baltic

The Brookings Cubs wrapped up the regular season by falling on the road to the Baltic River Dawgs 4-2 on Sunday night. Brookings finished the regular season with a 14-5 record and will open play in the 2024 South Dakota Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament on Aug. 9 at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.

Brookings Cubs wrap up regular season with loss to Baltic

BALTIC — The Brookings Cubs wrapped up the regular season by falling on the road to the Baltic River Dawgs 4-2 on Sunday night.

Brookings finished the regular season with a 14-5 record and will open play in the 2024 South Dakota Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament on Aug. 9 at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.

The Cubs opened the game with a rally in the top of the first inning. Hammrich led off with a single before Chase McDaniel and Rhett Zelinsky were hit by a pitch to load the bases. Parker Winghart drove in a run with a sacrifice fly but Brookings couldn’t add to its lead as Tyler Kreutner and Jackson Krogman struck out to end the inning.

Baltic took advantage in the bottom of the second inning when Colbe Scott stole home on a double steal and the River Dawgs took the lead on Carter Sorenson’s ground out. Baltic added to the lead on Noah Hammond’s single and a run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning and Winghart added the final run with an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning.

The Cubs had five hits in the game as Winghart finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Hammrich went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Zelinsky went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Kruetner and Krogman each went 1-for-4. Cole Mahlum walked twice and stole a base.

Tucker Wookey made the start for Brookings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts over six innings. Zach Shastay finished the game, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over two innings.
