Brookings goes 2-1 in road trip out west

The Brookings softball team went 2-1 in a road trip out west over the weekend. The Bobcats took down Sturgis Brown and Spearfish on Friday before falling to Rapid City Sevens on Saturday.

Brookings goes 2-1 in road trip out west

The Brookings softball team went 2-1 in a road trip out west over the weekend. The Bobcats took down Sturgis Brown and Spearfish on Friday before falling to Rapid City Sevens on Saturday.

Brookings is now 9-5 this season. The Bobcats will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 9, Sturgis Brown 5

STURGIS — The Bobcats had a five-run fifth inning and that proved to be the difference in their first game of the weekend.

Brookings led 1-0 after one inning as Kymber Buys scored on a passed ball. 

The first runs of the fifth inning for the Bobcats came on a three-run single from Addy Bortnem. Kinzey Grendler then hit Bortnem home with a single. Grendler and Morgan Norgaard then came home on an error to make it 6-0.

Sturgis got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs. The first run came from an error and the second was on a ground out. 

Brookings extended the lead to 7-2 in the sixth as Grace Romsa scored on an error. The ‘Cats then pushed the lead to 9-2 in the top of the seventh. Buys hit a solo home run and then Grendler hit an RBI single to make it a seven-run game.

The Scoopers scored three runs in the bottom of the inning but that was not enough and the Bobcats came away with the win.

Brookings had 13 hits. Buys and Grendler were each 3-for-5 with an RBI and Bortnem was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tess Burns was 2-for-4 and Romsa was 2-for-3. Norgaard was 1-for-4. Keisha Cushing was 1-for-2.

Burns pitched a complete game. She gave up three unearned runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Brookings 11, Spearfish 0 (5 inn.)

The Bobcats scored in all five innings and won via the 10-run rule. 

Brookings scored three runs in the top of the first. Buys hit a solo home run to center field and then Romsa hit one over the right field fence to score two runs and make it 3-0.

Ramsie Hinricher hit a solo home run in the second and then Burns hit Brookings’ fourth home run of the game in the third. It was also a solo home run and it was 5-0 heading into the fourth. 

Buys and Burns each hit RBI singles in the fourth to make it 7-0. Layla Erickson then drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Buys then hit an RBI single and then Norgaard and Erickson each scored on a steal of home to make it an 11-run game and Spearfish did not score in the bottom of the inning.

Brookings had nine hits. Buys was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Burns was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Romsa was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Hinricher was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bortnem was 1-for-2 and Erickson had an RBI without a hit. 

Saturday

Rapid City Stevens 6, Brookings 1

Brookings led 1-0 after one inning but then the Raiders scored six runs in the final three and a half innings.

Buys walked with two outs and then made her way to third on a Burns single. She then scored on a steal of home to make it 1-0.

The Raiders tied the game with a run on an error in the bottom of the fourth. They then took the lead with four runs in the fifth. The first run came on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Then a sacrifice fly made it 3-1 and two runs on an error pushed the lead to 5-1. The final run of the game for Stevens came on an RBI single in the sixth.

Brookings had just two hits. Tess Burns was 1-for-2 and Kalla Foerster was 1-for-4. 

Burns pitched four and two thirds innings. She gave up five runs, two earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Ella Psyk pitched the final inning and a third and gave up one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.
