The Brookings High School Band delivered a stellar performance, perhaps their best of the year, at the Youth in Music Marching Band Championships on Oct. 12. The event, held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, is one of the largest and most prestigious competitions in the region. With their performance, the BHS Marching Band wowed the audience and judges alike.
Competing in the highly competitive Class AA, known for its close and challenging competition, the band secured a third-place finish with their 2024 field show, “Writings on the Wall.” The show tells a story of division, conflict, and the desire for change. Through music and movement, the performers explore themes of struggle and resilience.
Under the direction of band director Isaac McMahon, the band showcased their hard work and dedication through a dynamic presentation that artfully blended music and visual elements. The theme took spectators on a journey, illustrating stories of resilience and hope through powerful musical compositions and vibrant choreography.
“This year’s performance at Youth in Music was a culmination of countless hours of practice and a deep commitment from every member of the band,” McMahon stated. “I am incredibly proud of what the students accomplished. Competing in Class AA is difficult, and their hard work and talent didn’t go unnoticed.”
This competition marked the last time on the field for the 24 seniors in the band, who have devoted many hours to creating what the band is today. Their leadership and passion have left an indelible mark on the ensemble, and they were determined to make their final performance memorable.
“Every one of us walked off the field feeling good about our performance and how we’ve represented the band over the years,” said senior color guard member Melisia Ouambo.
In addition to their impressive placement, the Brookings High School band was honored with the title of Wind Section Champion, a testament to the outstanding sound produced by their woodwind and brass sections. Judges praised their exceptional tone quality and ensemble balance, noting how these elements enhanced the overall performance.
“The wind section is committed to producing the highest quality sound we can, which is no different than any other section. We’re proud that the judges recognized the quality of our sound and the high level we hold ourselves to,” said senior saxophonist Luka Kennedy.
As the last competitive performance of the season for many bands, the event showcased dozens of bands from across a four-state region who were eager to display their talents in front of a packed stadium. The energy was high as the audience cheered for their favorite groups and even bands they had never seen perform before.
Family and friends of the BHS Marching Band filled the stands to show their support. Many expressed pride in the band’s accomplishments, highlighting how it reflects the dedication of both the students and the music program. Brookings received lots of applause and many commented that their show was easily a first place contender.
“The band works tirelessly, and this recognition is well-deserved,” said BHS Band Booster president Kyleigh Cramer. “Their success isn’t just the result of one season of work; it’s the result of years of practice and commitment to their art.”
This year the band’s placements speak for themselves. The band placed in the top three at every competition they attended. “The passion and teamwork these kids have is something that is hard to put into words,” Cramer added. “I am beyond proud of all 120 of them, as well as the parents who show up every weekend to do the work behind the scenes.”
As the day concluded, the Brookings High School Band celebrated their achievements and reflected on the season. With another successful outing at the Youth in Music Marching Band Championships, the band is poised to carry this momentum into future endeavors, and there is no doubt that this group has left a lasting legacy for Brookings High School’s marching band.
The band finished out their performances with two indoor shows this past Friday.
