Brookings School Board extends Fifth Street Gym sale date

BROOKINGS — The Brookings School Board voted to extend through April 1 the contract to sell the Fifth Street Gym. The unanimous vote came during the board’s work session Wednesday afternoon.

In September, the district declared the gym surplus property. On Nov. 12, the board voted to enter into a contract with Realtor Ryan Krogman to list the property for sale with an asking price of $500,000. Showings to prospective buyers began Nov. 19, and the original plan called for the board to consider offers at their Jan. 13 meeting. During that meeting, the board chose not to take any action on the gym.

Superintendent Summer Schultz said selling a property like this takes time and requires patience.

“I know that we would like to see things come together quicker. We just wanted to make sure that we extended that for a period of time that allowed us — if we were to continue to go into negotiations or a proposal wasn’t accepted — that we had Ryan under a contract,” she said. “It is our hope that things could get approved, and we’d be able to share that information sooner than April 1. But like I said, we just wanted to put enough time out there for Ryan to have time to work and let the process play out.”

She said these types of negotiations necessarily have to take place privately.

“You know, I do think the public is anxious. They want to know. However terms of contract are difficult because they are legally private, and that’s just important for the buyer and the seller,” Schultz said. “I just can’t share anything more at this time than we did have multiple offers to go through, and until one is accepted you can continue to get offers. And that’s why — since we did not accept an offer Monday evening — more could come in (Wednesday) and did. And even moving forward, people are able to visit with Ryan and put in an offer for us to consider up until the point that an offer is accepted.”
