BROOKINGS — Central Bank in Brookings is planning to demolish its existing building at 600 Main Ave. and replace it with a new facility.

Demolition of the existing 17,177-square-foot multi-story building is expected to begin later this month. It will be replaced by a 6,234-square-foot single-story facility on the same site, according to information in a Brookings Planning Commission memo.

The bank said in a news release that construction will take from 12 to 18 months. “The new space will provide the latest banking technology for a faster, simpler way to bank.”

There are some key dates for the bank’s customers to keep in mind:

  • Today is the last day of normal business hours at the current location.
  • Starting April 14, the bank’s temporary location will open at 629 Fifth Ave. with normal lobby hours. That’s next door to First Dakota Title.

Central Bank’s current building was built in 1978. It’s housed a number of banks over the decades, with Central Bank entering the picture in 2020.

Per information from the city, existing access drives and drive-through lanes will remain in place, and a portion of the parking lot to the north will be reconstructed, while the northern two-thirds of the parking area will remain in place.

This isn’t the first time Central Bank has had plans, either. In 2022, it explored renovating its building, but those plans have since been modified for a teardown and reconstruction.
