BROOKINGS — The Brookings Post 74 Chutes junior American Legion baseball team breezed through a first-round matchup, sweeping Sturgis in a best-of-three series at Bob Shelden Field this weekend.
The Chutes improved to 27-10 and will open the Class A Junior State Tournament in Pierre on Thursday.
The Chutes scored early and often and Breck Wilson threw a five-inning no-hitter as Brookings cruised to a 10-0 victory that ended in five innings via the 10-run rule on Friday night.
The Chutes opened the scoring when Cooper Schneider hit a one-out single and stole second base. After advancing to third base on an error, Schneider scored on Jase Bauer’s single for the first run of the game.
Gavin Hammrich drew a walk to continue the rally before Talon Hyde singled. Bauer scored on an error on the play to make it 2-0 and Jay Harris cashed in with runners on second and third base with a sacrifice fly to put Brookings ahead 3-0. Tane Freidrich put the ball in play in the next at-bat and an error allowed Hyde to score to put Brookings ahead 4-0.
The Chutes added to their lead when Will Conrad scored on a balk in the bottom of the second inning and Schneider drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Brookings delivered the final blow in the bottom of the fifth inning on a rally that began when Hammrich was hit by a pitch and stole two bases before scoring on an error to put the Chutes up 7-0.
Harris singled, Friedrich walked and Nolan Wagner was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Christopherson’s one-out single and Schneider’s hit-by-pitch drove in the final runs of the game.
Wilson did the rest from there, issuing four outs and striking out four batters in five hitless innings.
Brookings had seven hits in the game and had multi-hit efforts from Bauer and Hyde. Bauer went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a run scored and Hyde went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Christopherson went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Schneider went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Harris went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Chutes’ lineup continued to click as they defeated the Missiles 17-0 in five innings via the 10-run rule.
Brookings served as the away team for the second game of the series and took advantage on a leadoff walk by Christopherson. Christopherson stole second base and advanced on third base and scored on a pair of wild pitches for the first run of the game.
Bauer walked and scored on a Hammrich double to make it 2-0 and Hammrich advanced to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on Hyde’s groundout to go ahead 3-0.
Christopherson sparked another rally in the top of the second inning with a walk and stole second and third base. Bauer was hit by a pitch with one out and Christopherson stole home to put Brookings ahead 4-0.
Hyde drove in two runs with a triple and scored on an error before Friedrich drove in another run with a double to put the Bandits up 8-0. Brookings added to its lead when Christopherson walked and scored on a Hammrich single in the top of the third inning and the Chutes put the game away with an eight-run fourth inning.
Wagner was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth before Ryker Anderson drew a walk. Christopherson walked to load the bases but Max Jensen scored with some heads-up baserunning to put Brookings ahead 10-0.
Schneider drove in two runs with a single to extend the lead to 12-0 and Bauer drove in a run with a single to make it 13-0. Hammrich walked before Hyde drove in two runs with a single before Harris walked, Jensen drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Wagner singled for the final 17-0 score.
Conrad started for Brookings, allowing two hits and striking out five batters over four shutout innings. Kysin Reuer finished the game, striking out two batters in a shutout fifth inning.
Brookings had nine hits in the game. Hammrich went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, three runs scored and two RBI. Hyde went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and five RBI.
Schneider went 1-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Bauer went 1-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and an RBI. Harris went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Friedrich went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Wagner went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Chutes also stole 10 bases in the win. Christopherson had four stolen bases while Hammrich and Bauer had two each. Harris and Hyde each had one stolen base.
