BROOKINGS — The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes had a doubleheader split with Watertown on Tuesday night.

The Chutes had the elation of a walk-off win in game one of the doubleheader and then squandered a lead in the final two innings in game two. Brookings won 6-5 in 10 innings in the first game and lost 8-3 in game two.

Brookings is now 13-7 on the season and plays in the Scheels Invitational in Fargo this weekend. The Chutes will open the tournament on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with a game against Renner.

Game 1: Brookings 6, Watertown 5 (10 inn.)

Game one went all the way to the 10th inning and it was Brookings who came out on top in the marathon.

The two teams were tied 4-4 after seven innings and neither team scored in the eighth or ninth inning. Watertown scored a run on an RBI single from Kohl Nygaard in the top of the 10th but the Chutes rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Cooper Schneider led off the inning with a single. Tyson Antonen then hit a single of his own and both he and Schneider advanced on the throw from the left fielder. Gavin Hammrich then came to the plate with one out and he hit Schneider home with a single and Antonen was held at third. One batter later Jay Harris was up and he gave the Chutes the victory as he hit one through the right side of the infield.

Watertown struck first in the game in the top of the first. Cole Hansen hit a single to lead off the game and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then came home on a ground out from Jackson McClemans, making it 1-0 Watertown.

Neither team scored again until Brookings tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Hammrich hit a one-out single and then made it to second on an error. He then scored on a single from Tane Friedrich and that made it 1-1 heading into the sixth.

The Chutes then gained the lead with three runs in the sixth. Schneider and Jase Bauer hit back-to-back singles with one out and Schneider scored on a double from Antonen. Maxten Jensen was a courtesy runner for Bauer and he scored on a passed ball. Antonen then scored on a balk from the pitcher to make it 4-1 heading into what should have been the final inning.

Watertown had a runner on first with two outs and a single from Hansen put runners on second and third as both runners advanced on a throw from the left fielder. Both runners then scored on a single from Carter Buisker and Buisker came home on a single from Luka Lessin, which sent the game into extra innings.
