College track and field: Jackrabbits come in second at Holiday meet


BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State track and field team finished in second place as action concluded on Saturday at the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi in the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

Discus throw and the final events of the men’s heptathlon served as the final tallying points toward team scores in the Jackrabbits’ first meet of the indoor season.

SDSU took the top three spots as Ethan Fischer made headlines with his mark of 181-03.00 to win the event and break the school record. In the event debuts, Caiden Fredrick finished second with a 173-00.00, Lee Reiser threw a 156-02.50 for third and Ryan Hackbart was seventh with a 151-07.25.

In the women’s discus, Milee Young led the way as four Jackrabbits qualified for the event finals. She finished in third place with her throw of 145-08.50 as Ryann Moline took fourth with a 139-10.00. Kaitlynn Bot claimed seventh with her mark of 123-09.50 and freshman Taylor Luscomb threw a 119-06.25 for ninth.

In the combined team scores, South Dakota State finished in second out of 21 squads with 267 points through 34 scores events. South Dakota took first with 314.50 points as Dordt rounded out the top three with 118.50 points.

The SDSU Holiday Open and Multi is the lone competition for the Jackrabbit squad in December. SDSU is scheduled to head north for the Bison Team Cup in Fargo, N.D., on Jan. 13.
