Three South Dakota State wrestlers were honored Tuesday as members of the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District At-Large Team. The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom.
All three Jackrabbit wrestlers named to the team were individual qualifiers for this past winter’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The honorees included:
• Clay Carlson, Sr., Willmar, Minnesota — 3.92 undergraduate grade-point average in animal science/4.0 graduate GPA in pre-veterinary medicine.
• Cade DeVos, Jr., Altoona, Iowa — 3.62 GPA in pre-pharmacy/interdisciplinary studies.
• Cade King, Sr., Waseca, Minnesota — 3.64 GPA in business economics.
Carlson received the award for the second consecutive year.
To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.50 grade-point average, be at least a sophomore in academic in athletic and academic standing, and be a starter or key reserve. Academic All-District honorees advance to the national ballot for CSC Academic All-America® consideration. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.
The CSC academic at-large teams are comprised of male student-athletes competing in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis, water polo and wrestling.
