Cossacks dominate doubleheader against Sisseton

The Sioux Valley softball team took it to Sisseton on Tuesday night as the Cossacks won each game of a doubleheader via the 15-run rule.

Cossacks dominate doubleheader against Sisseton

VOLGA — The Sioux Valley softball team took it to Sisseton on Tuesday night as the Cossacks won each game of a doubleheader via the 15-run rule.

The Cossacks won the first game 19-1 in three innings and the second game took three innings as well with Sioux Valley winning 19-4.

Sioux Valley is now 10-5 on the season and hosts Castlewood on Friday at 4 p.m.

Game 1: Sioux Valley 19, Sisseston 1

The Cossacks needed just two innings of at bats to get the job done in game one. They scored five runs in the first and 14 in the second.

Kassidy Smith reached on an error to begin the bottom of the first and Zoe Hemmestad was hit by a pitch nex. Amelia Jacobson was then walked to load the bases up with one out and McKinley Schwab hit a two-run single to get the Cossacks on the board. Two batters later Abby Axtell hit a two-run double and she later scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0 through one inning.

Morgan Lemme was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second and then Jacobson and Schwab walked to load the bases up with no outs. Cameron Uecker then walked to score a run and Murano hit a one-out single to make it 7-0. Jaycie Olson and Smith then each walked to push the lead to 9-0.

Murano scored on a Hemmestad ground out and Lemme followed with a walk to make it 11-0. Lemme and Smith then each scored on an error to stretch the lead to 13-0. Axtell later hit an RBI single and Murano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two more runs then came home on an error. Hemmestad was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Lemme followed with a walk to make it 19-0.

The Redmen scored on an RBI single in the top of the third but they were unable to cut the lead under 15 and the game ended.

Sioux Valley only had four hits as a team. Axtell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Schwab and Murano were each 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Hemme stad had two RBIs without a hit. Smith, Lemme and Uecker all had an RBI without a hit. 

Axtell pitched a complete game for the Cossacks. She gave up one earned run on two hits and had eight strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Sioux Valley 19, Sisseton 4

Sisseton led 1-0 after the first half inning again as the Redmen scored a run on an error.

Sioux Valley answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Smith and Hemmestad hit back-to-back singles to lead the half inning off and then Schwab walked to load the bases up. Smith came home on a passed ball and then Jacobson hit Schwab and Hemmestad home with a single to make it 3-1. Jacobson then scored on an error and Uecker hit a two-run double to make it 6-1 after one inning.

The Redmen struck for three runs in the top of the second. The first run came from a single and then two runs came home on an error to make it 6-4.

The Cossacks added five runs in the second. Schwab walked to begin the inning and then Murano drew a one-out walk. Schwab would then come home on a passed ball. Olson walked and Zaylee Langten singled to load the bases up with one out. Matilynn Jaquet then walked with two outs and Smith hit a bases clearing triple to make it 11-4 heading into the third.

Sioux Valley scored nine runs in the third to end the game. Jacobson hit a one-out single and Murano followed with a two-run home run over the center field fence. A run came home on another error and then Smith hit another bases clearing triple to make it 17-4. One more run scored on an error and Murano hit an RBI single to end the game.

Sioux Valley had 12 hits. Smith was 3-for-4 and Murano was 2-for-2. Jacobson was 2-for-3 and Olson was 1-for-1. Swchwab and Lantgen were each 1-for-2. Hemmestad was 1-for-3.
