COLTON — The Sioux Valley boys’ wrestling team went 2-1 in the Mustang Quadrangular on Tuesday afternoon. The Cossacks beat Howard and Marion/Freeman before falling to quadrangular host Tri-Valley.
The Cossacks will be competing in the Rapid City Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Cossacks won seven matches against Howard. Triston Kurtenbach and Luke Johnson each won matches via forfeit.
Kyson Sundberg got the first actual win for the Cossacks in the 113-pound weight class. He pinned Michael Becker in 3:07. Matthew Field then picked up a win at 138 as he pinned Drew Maier in 1:57.
Vanden Virchow then pinned Hoyt Kizer at 150 in 5:16. Gile Rud won a 15-3 major decision over Kreyton Karstens at 175. Owen Vandeweerd was the final wrestler for the Cossacks and he pinned Thomas Halverson in 1:47.
The Cossacks won eight of the final nine matches. Tyson Norgaard, Wyatt Hardt, Harvey Hardt, Luke Johnson, Wyatt Nelson and Triston Kurtenbach all picked up wins via forfeit.
Virchow pinned Caleb Kirkholm in 1:57 at 150 and Sundberg pinned David Wollmann in 1:35 at 113.
The Cossacks won four matches in their final match of the day.
Sunberg kicked off the match with a 4-3 decision over Sean King. Field pinned Will Sly in 1:23 at 138 and Virchow pinned Marcus Oberg in 1:10 at 150. The final win of the day for Sioux Valley was a 4-1 decision from Vandeweerd over Luke Nehlich at 285.
