VOLGA — Sioux Valley made quick work of Florence/Henry on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Region 2A Playoffs as the Cossacks swept the Falcons.
The No. 3 seeded Cossacks got off to a bit of a slow start as they trailed the No. 6 seeded Falcons 8-5 in the first set. Sioux Valley then went on a 9-1 run and went up 14-9. The Cossacks outscored the Falcons 11-3 over the next 14 points and came away with a 25-12 victory in set one.
Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said she thought her team was just trying to figure things out early in the set.
“As a team we decided we were going to go out and have fun tonight and I think they just had to get their feet under them. [Once they did that], they were ready to pass in the back row and had a lot of things go their way,” Vincent said.
It was all Cossacks from there. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set and then led 16-6. Sioux Valley would then go on a 9-2 run to end the set and win 25-8. In the third set the Cossacks led 5-0 to start. They pushed the lead to 19-9 and then eventually won the set 25-12 and took the match.
Sioux Valley’s service was great all night as the Cossacks had just four service errors and 10 service aces. Elise Lemme and Sunny Hesby each led the team with four aces. Vincent said when her team can serve like that it keeps everyone engaged.
“[Hesby’s] serving was phenomenal. I think we only missed [four] serves tonight and during [a couple of service runs] our front row was really into the game, so that helps out a lot when they do that,” Vincent said.
Kaedyn Sapp had 13 kills and six digs to lead Sioux Valley at the net. Adison Renkly had 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. Caitlin Russell had 15 digs and Machaela Gerash had 17 assists. Hesby had 15 assists. Talya Vincent had nine digs and Emma Gorvin had five kills.
Florence/Henry was led by Roean Raymer who had eight kills. Andie Risolv and Kaylee Vavruska each had 11 digs. Ashlynn Vavruska had nine digs and Ana Byer had nine assists.
Sioux Valley will take on No. 2 seeded Great Plains Lutheran in Watertown on Thursday for a trip to the SoDak 16. The Cossacks lost to the Panthers 2-1 in a three-set match in the Milbank Tournament on Oct. 19. Vincent said she thought her team fought hard but knows they can play better than what they showed in Milbank.
“Our first matchup, I thought we played fearlessly and we did a lot of great things against them, but this time we know we can play better and will be able to block better and pass better this time . I think it’ll be a good experience for us,” Vincent said.
With it being win or go home on Thursday, Vincent said she doesn’t want her team to feel pressure, but she also wants them to have some urgency because if they lose the season is over.
“We want to treat it like any other game, but with a sense of urgency because there isn’t a next time. You don’t get to come back to the court if you don’t win. So, we want to make sure we’re playing our best and giving it our all and allowing our teammates to make mistakes and picking them up after that,” Vincent said.
