Cossacks top Tatanka, Warbirds

VOLGA — The Sioux Valley boys’ basketball team got back on track over the weekend as the Cossacks beat Lakota Tech and Wolsey-Wessington.

The Cossacks were coming off of their second loss of the season and beat the Tatanka 57-55 on Friday night and then topped the Warbirds 60-51 on Saturday night.

Sioux Valley is now 4-2 on the season and will host Hamlin on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Friday

Sioux Valley 57, Lakota Tech 55

The Cossacks were able to hold off the Tatanka and get the victory on Friday night.

It was a close first half as the Cossacks led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and then took a 29-26 lead into the second half.

Sioux Valley extended the lead to 34-28 with just under six minutes remaining in the third. However, the Tatanka would cut the lead to 42-38 heading into the fourth. It was 44-41 with 7:15 left in the game and the Cossacks went on an 8-1 run to go up 52-42 with 4:19 remaining. Sioux Valley then led 54-44 with 2:17 to play and made enough free throws to counter 3-pointers from Lakota Tech to win the game.

Sioux Valley shot 43.5% from the field and was 7-of-20 from three. Maverick Nelson had a big game for the Cossacks as he had 26 points and eight rebounds. Carter Sapp had nine points and 11 rebounds. Brock Christopherson and Brady Hiltunen each had six points.

Lakota Tech shot 38.5% from the field and was 8-of-24 from three. The Tatanka were led by Julian Tonche who had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Dominic Johnson and Treyton Sam each had 13 points. Jacob Catches had seven points.

Each team had 26 rebounds and 14 turnovers. Sioux Valley was 10-of-16 at the free throw line and Lakota Tech was 5-of-10.

Saturday

Sioux Valley 60, Wolsey-Wessington 51

The Cossacks fell behind but then had a strong second, third and fourth quarter to earn the win on Saturday.

Wolsey-Wessington led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Cossacks then opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run. Sioux Valley then took a 27-24 lead into halftime.

The Cossacks pushed the lead to 39-30 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. They would lead 45-39 heading into the fourth. The Warbirds then cut the deficit to 47-44 with six minutes left in the game. Sioux Valley used a 9-2 run to push the lead to 56-46 with 2:38 left in the game and that put things away.

Sioux Valley shot 46% from the field and was 5-of-13 from three. Nelson and Braden Danzeisen each had 18 points. Nelson also had 10 rebounds. Sapp had eight points and six rebounds and Christopherson had six points.

Wolsey-Wessington shot 33.9% from the field and was 7-of-26 from three. Moshe Richmond led the Warbirds with 22 points and nine rebounds. Caleb Richmond and Peyton Rainford each had 10 points. Sawyer Nelson had six points.

The Cossacks had 34 rebounds and the Warbirds had 25. Sioux Valley had 14 turnovers and Wolsey-Wessington had eight. The Cossacks were 9-of-11 at the free throw line and the Warbirds were 4-of-16 at the charity stripe.
