BROOKINGS — Rhett Zelinsky drove in three runs and the Brookings Cubs used three pitchers to throw a no-hitter to a 14-0 win over the Volga Cormorants at Bob Shelden Field on Sunday evening.
The win helped the Cubs improve to 2-0 on the season and marked the second straight game where Brookings scored 14 runs.
The game opened with Volga and Brookings alternating scoreless frames over the first two innings before Henry Hammrich started a third-inning rally with a one-out single. Noel Burgos followed with a walk before both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Hammrich scored on an RBI groundout by Zelinsky for the first run of the game and Burgos scored on an error by Cole Gross to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Brookings mounted another rally in the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back walks by Jamison Honkomp and Joey McMacken. Justin Cofell flew out for the first out of the inning but Hammrich drew a walk before Honkomp scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
Zelinsky and Paul Winghart drew bases-loaded walks and Noah Buss was hit by a pitch to put the Cubs up 6-0 before Brookings added two more runs in the next at-bat. Kreutner drove in Zelinsky with a single and Winghart scored on an error by Damian Danziesen.
The fifth inning saw more fireworks when Hammrich led off with a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. After a Burgos strikeout, Zelinsky drove in Hammrich with a single and Winghart and Buss each drew walks to load the bases.
An error by Kyler Bezdichek allowed Zelinsky to score before Honkomp drove in a run with a single to make it 11-0. Zach Shastay drove in a run with a groundout before Kruetner scored on a wild pitch and Daniel Messerli drove in a run with a single for the final score.
Krogman started on the mound allowing two walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Craig Lasley threw two perfect innings with a strikeout and Shastay finished the game with a perfect inning and two strikeouts.
Hammrich finished 2-for-3 with two walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Zelinsky finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. Winghard went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and two RBI and Kreutner went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Honkomp went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. McMacken walked twice and scored a run. Messerli went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Buss walked three times, drove in a run, scored once and stole a base.
Dylan Vosburg started for Volga, allowing two runs (one earned on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Gross allowed five earned runs on five walks in 0.1 innings. Noah Puetz allowed seven runs (three earned) on three hits and five walks with a pair of strikeouts. Bezdichek allowed three hits and a walk with a strikeout over 1.2 innings.
Michael Larson and Bayley Colemer each drew walks for the Cormorants.
The Cubs will return to action when they travel to play the Sioux Falls Brewers on Thursday night.
