BROOKINGS — Three members of the South Dakota State volleyball team earned recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday, including a Northwest Region Coach of the Year nod for head coach Dan Georgalas.
In addition to Georgalas, Sydni Schetnan and Sylvie Zgonc became the first Jackrabbits to be named to an AVCA All-Region team in SDSU’s Division I era.
Georgalas, in his fifth season at SDSU, guided the Jackrabbits to a 27-3 overall record in 2024 as the program returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Jacks won the Summit League regular season title and earned an at-large bid the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Georgalas was tabbed the Summit League Coach of the Year.
Schetnan was one of the best blockers in the country, as well as one of the most efficient attackers this past season. After reaching 100 total blocks quicker than anyone else in the Summit League, she ultimately finished the year with 146 blocks (1.29 blocks/set), including 30 solo blocks. On offense, the Sioux Falls native totaled 281 kills and a .388 hitting percentage. Schetnan was named First Team All-Summit and made the Summit League All-Tournament team last month.
Zgonc, a native of Hartford, Wis., ranks 22nd nationally in kills (494), 31st in points (551.5), and 26th in total attacks (1,301) while leading the league in kills per set (4.37) and points per set (4.88). The sophomore was named the Summit League Player of the Year and ended the season with 18 double-doubles as SDSU posted a 27-3 overall record and finished 15-1 in the conference.
In total, 14 athletes were named to the All-Northwest Region team. Oregon’s Mimi Collier was named the Player of the Year and Washington’s Julia Hunt was tabbed Freshman of the Year. The 211 student-athletes who made All-Region represent 108 different schools. Pittsburgh leads the way with seven selections, followed by Oregon with six. Creighton, Florida, Kansas, Louisville, Nebraska, Stanford and Wisconsin all had five All-Region picks.
