Deubrook hangs right with top seed before falling at state

HURON — Making their first state tournament appearance, the Deubrook Dolphins put a scare into top-seeded and unbeaten Centerville before falling 51-46.

The Dolphiins led 10-7 after one period and scored 32 points in the second half, but a furious fourth quarter from the top seed — Centerville scored 20 points in the frame — sent them on to the state semifinals.

Deubrook Area got strong games from their top three scorers — Mataya Gouws had 15, Kylee Johnson scored 12 and Matte Bauman chipped in nine.

But it did not quite match the Tornadoes top trio. Izze Eide had 22 for Centerville, Emma Marshall had 15 and Althea Gust managed 11 despite shooting just 2-of-10 from three.

The Tornadoes move to 24-0 this season and have won 34-straight games, a streak that dates back to Feb. 5, 2024.

Turnovers were ultimately the difference in the game, with Deubrook coughing the ball up 18 times to Centerville’s 9.

The Dolphins won the battle down low, outscoring the Tornadoes 36-22 in the paint.

The Dolphins were the No. 1 seed in Region 2B and beat Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 78-54 in their first playoff game. They then beat Wessington Springs 65-49 to punch their ticket to the SoDak 16. In the SoDak 16 Deubrook was the No. 10 seed and pulled out a 53-50 win over No. 7 seeded Kadoka Area.

Centerville moves on to a clash of titans in the semifinals, when they face fifth seeded Bennett County, who is 22-2.

Deubrook, now 18-6 on the season, plays Parkston at noon today in Huron.
