Dolphins fall in final two games at state

HURON — The Deubrook Area girls’ basketball team lost its final two games of the Class B State Tournament over the weekend.

The No. 8 seeded Dolphins lost their opening game of the tournament to top-seeded Centerville on Thursday and then fell to Parkston on Friday and Harding County on Saturday.

Deubrook Area finished the season with a record of 18-8.

Friday

Parkston 56, Deubrook Area 52 (F/OT)

Keeara Oakley made a shot with 41 seconds left in overtime and then Morgan Maxwell hit two free throws to put the game on ice.

Parkston led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and then had a 24-22 lead heading into halftime. The Trojans extended the lead to 37-34 by the end of the third quarter. Deubrook then used a 7-0 run to take a 41-39 lead with 5:44 left in regulation. The Dolphins then led 48-45 with 1:43 to play and Berkley Ziebart hit a three to tie the game. Oakley made a shot in the paint with 13 seconds left to give the Trojans the lead. Peyton Trooien was then able to make a shot at the buzzer that tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Deubrook shot 43.9% from the field and was 4-of-10 from three. Mataya Gouws led the Dolphins with 23 points and eight rebounds. Matte Bauman and Kylee Johnson each had eight points.

Parkston shot 36.5% from the field and was 4-of-19 from three. The Trojans were  led by Oakley who had 17 points. Ziebart had 16 points and six rebounds. 

The Dolphins had a 33-20 advantage in rebounds. Deubrook had 25 turnovers and Parkston had 11. The Dolphins were 12-of-17 at the free throw line and the Trojans were 14-of-19.

Saturday

Harding County 48, Deubrook Area 39

A tough second and third quarter led to the defeat for the Dolphins on Saturday.

Harding County led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Rangers then outscored the Dolphins 9-5 in the second quarter and took a 25-20 into halftime. Harding County then extended its lead to 40-28 by the end of the third quarter. The Dolphins had an 11-8 advantage in the final quarter but it was too little too late.

The Dolphins shot 35% from the field and were 5-of-17 from three. Johnson led Deubrook with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bauman had 10 points.

Harding County shot 37% from the field and was 7-of-21 from three. The Ranchers were led by Bailey Verhulst who had 13 points. Bradyn Padden had 11 points. 

Deubrook won the rebound battle 32-27. The Dolphins had 20 turnovers and the Ranchers had 13. Deubrook was 6-of-13 at the free throw line and Harding County was 6-of-13.
