GRAND FORKS – North Dakota got off to a hot start on Saturday afternoon and theFighting Hawks snapped South Dakota State’s five-game win streak with an 80-75 victory.
UND made 16 of its first 21 shots and shot 68.8% in the first half. The Fighting Hawks did not have a turnover in the first 20 minutes.
The Fighting Hawks (9-15, 3-6) led 11-9 just over five minutes into the game and then went on a 10-0 run. UND stretched the lead to 32-16 with eight minutes left in the half and then pushed it to 41-22 with 5:33 left. That was the Fighting Hawks’ largest lead of the game.
SDSU (15-9, 6-3) trailed 50-35 at halftime. The Jacks cut the lead to 53-45 three minutes into the second half but the Fighting Hawks pushed it to 60-47 a minute and a half later. UND then led 69-43 with 6:22 to play and the Jacks scored six straight to make it a 10-point game with four minutes left. The closest SDSU came was with 46 seconds left as a Kalen Garry 3-pointer made it 77-71. The Jacks had chances to make it closer but were unable to hit shots the rest of the way.
SDSU shot 43.8% from the field and was 10-of-27 from three. Sayler led the Jacks with 20 points. Oscar Cluff had his fifth straight double-double with 10 points and 19 rebounds. Garry had 12 points and five rebounds and Owen Larson had 10 points and five assists.
UND Shot 55.2% from the field for the game and was 10-of-19 from beyond the arc. Owen King had a big day for the Fighting Hawks with 24 points and he was 10-of-16 from the field. Treysen Eaglestaff had 19 points. UND had three other players score in double figures as Mier Panoam had 12 points, Amar Kuljuhovic had 11 and Mambourou Mara had 10.
SDSU had a 44-23 advantage in rebounds. The Jacks had 15 turnovers and the Fighting Hawks had six. SDSU was 9-of-13 at the free throw line and UND was 6-of-9.
The Jacks will return home this week and will welcome St. Thomas to Brookings on Thursday. The Tommies are in second place in the conference and beat SDSU 73-72 in St. Paul on Jan. 8. Tip off on Thursday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
