LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Five Jackrabbit wrestlers made the podium at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday with impressive upset wins from Derrick Cardinal and Drake Rhodes. The Jackrabbits finished ninth out of 30 teams at the prestigious events with a team score of 62.

On Saturday night, Bennett Berge was the only Jackrabbit wrestler to compete in the Championship Rounds during Session Four. Berge wrestled in the third-place match against Ohio State’s Seth Shumate. Berge scored two takedowns in the first period, allowing a late reversal before taking control of the match and scoring three more takedowns throughout the match, scoring a major decision win, 18-4 and securing a third-place finish. Earlier in the day, Berge took down 6-seed Jaden Bullock from Michigan with a gritty 4-1 decision win, where he was set to go against 5-seed Evan Bockman of Iowa State, where Bockman medically forfeited, allowing Berge to compete in the third-place match.

Drake Rhodes competed in the fifth-place match at 165 pounds during Session Three after a decision win against Kyle Mosher from Hofstra and a decision loss to 10-seed Bubba Wilson from Nebraska. Rhodes went up against 4-seed Hunter Garvin in the fifth-place match. After giving up an early takedown, Rhodes scored two takedowns of his own, grabbing an 8-4 decision over the No. 6 ranked wrestler in the country. Rhodes started the tournament unseeded and rattled off wins against the 12, 11, 9, and 4 seeds. His only losses were to 6 and 10 seeds at 165 pounds.

Derrick Cardinal scored the highest-ranked win of the day for the Jackrabbits when he went up against 1-seed Dylan Ragusin from Michigan in the seventh-place match. Cardinal scored a takedown in period one and a reversal in period two before scoring two near falls in the third and taking the decision, 12-5. Earlier in the session, Cardinal dropped a decision to 10-seed Reece Witcraft from Oklahoma State.

Tanner Jordan lost his first match of the day against the 8-seed Maximo Renteria from Oregon State in a tightly contested decision loss. He bounced back from the loss in the seventh-place match against Cornell’s Marcello Milani, where he shut out Milani and finished in seventh place at 125 pounds.

Cade DeVos dropped both of his matches in Session Three, losing both matches by decision in matches that were battles. He dropped his first match against 5-seed Danny Wask from Navy, 11-7, and his second against 8-seed Jared Simma from UNI, 11-9. He finished eighth at the CKLV Invitational.

The Jackrabbits are off next weekend, but return to action with a quad dual on Dec. 20 hosted by Rider University. The Jacks will compete against Rider, Pittsburgh and Maryland. On Dec. 21, SDSU will travel to Philadelphia for a dual against Drexel.
