Four area teams earn victories on the court

The Flandreau and Deubrook girls and Elkton-Lake Benton and Deubrook boys each earned wins in basketball over the weekend.

Each Deubrook team beat James Valley Christian. The Flandreau girls topped Tri-Valley and the ELB boys beat Florence/Henry. The ELB girls lost in triple overtime to Florence/Henry and Arlington boys fell to De Smet.

Girls

Flandreau 46, Tri-Valley 31

FLANDREAU — The Fliers put together a strong first half and that carried them to the victory on Friday night. They led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead to 21-12 by halftime. Tri-Valley cut the lead to 30-22 at the end of the third quarter. Flandreau then pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Tri-Valley 16-9 in the final quarter.

Flandreau shot 35% from the field and was 2-of-12 from three. Morgan Sheppard led the Fliers with 13 points and eight rebounds. Sadie Iott had 11 points and six rebounds. Madison Bushkofsky and Addyson Hammer had eight points. Hammer also had seven rebounds. Hannah Krull had six points and nine rebounds.

Tri-Valley shot 23.4% from the field and was 5-of-27 from three. Mattie Huwe and Izzy Davey each had eight points to lead the Mustangs. Madelyn Wenzel and Hailey Sorenson each had six points.

Flandreau had 40 rebounds and Tri-Valley had 30. The Fliers had 20 turnovers and the Mustangs had 15. Flandreau was 16-of-22 at the free throw line and Tri-Valley was 4-of-13.

Flandreau is now 4-3 and hosts Garretson on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Deubrook Area 65, James Valley Christian 6

WHITE — The Dolphins completely dominated the Vikings on Friday night. They led 25-0 at the end of the first quarter and 44-3 at halftime. Deubrook pushed the lead to 53-4 at the end of the third quarter and outscored JVC 12-3 in the final quarter.

The Dolphins were led by Clare Jorenby who had 15 points. Zoey Molengraaf had nine points and Peyton Trooien had eight points. Matte Bauman had six points and Kylee Johnson had five points.

Deubrook is now 7-2 and hosts Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday at 6:15 p.m.

Florence/Henry 63, Elkton-Lake Benton 57

ELKTON — The Lady Elks were edged out in triple overtime on Friday night.

ELB was led by Charlie Thooft who had 18 points. Gella Jones had 15 points and 11 steals. Sydney DeVries had eight points and seven rebounds. Andrea Renkly had seven points and Jocelyn Prosch had six points.

ELB is now 3-4 and plays Dell Rapids St. Mary in Lake Benton on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Boys

Elkton-Lake Benton 60, Florence/Henry 57

ELKTON — The Elks had a lead at halftime and were able to hold off the Falcons in the second half. ELB trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but then led 27-23 at halftime. The Elks would extend the lead to 45-38 heading into the fourth. FH outscored ELB 18-15 in the final quarter but that wasn’t enough.

Tanner Drietz had 21 points to lead ELB. Eliot Erickson had 12 points and seven assists. Tanner Stein had seven points and six rebounds. Riley Nordmeyer had six points.
Carson Vavruska had 19 points to lead FH. Ty Bergh had 17 points.

ELB is now 5-1 and plays Dell Rapids St. Mary in Lake Benton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Deubrook Area 81, James Valley Christian 78

WHITE — The Dolphins got out to a tough start but were able to battle through and earn the victory on Friday night.

Deubrook trailed 26-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Dolphins then outscored the Vikings 22-13 in the second quarter and led 40-39 at halftime. They extended the lead to 59-53 by the end of the third and then held off the Vikings in the fourth.

Issac Gass had a monster night for the Dolphins with 33 points. Josh Moberg had 23 points and Chance Schoenfeld had nine points. Braxton Bednarek had eight points.

Deubrook is now 5-4 and hosts Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

De Smet 60, Arlington 45

ARLINGTON — The Cardinals dropped 1-5 on the season with the loss.

Arlington shot 31% from the field and was 7-of-28 from three. Paxton Rheault led the Cardinals with 25 points and eight rebounds. Brecken Vossler had eight points. Miles Antonen and Sergio Maldonado each had six points.

De Smet shot 30.3% from the field and was 5-of-27 from three. Grant Wilkinson had 22 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Noah Luethmers had 12 points and Slayton Wilkinson had seven points. Carter Wilkinson and Ganon Henrich each had six points. Henrich also had 11 rebounds.

Arlington hosts Deuel on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
