High school cross-country: Sioux Valley Cossacks claim first, third at Deuel Invite

CLEAR LAKE — The Sioux Valley boys’ cross country team won the Deuel Invite on Monday afternoon at the Clear Lake Golf Club.

The Cossacks came in first place with 55 points. Deuel finished in second (59) and Clark/Willow Lake came in third (60). Tri-State came in fourth (75) and Great Plains Lutheran rounded out the teams that had enough runners to have a team score (77).

Carson Wosje was the top runner for the Cossacks and he came in second place with a time of 17:55.72. Bret Milton came in 15th (19:46.81) and Levi Axtell came in 20th (20:09.08). Brady Hiltunen finished in 31st (20:48.54) and Carter Sapp came in 35th (21:30.21).

Estelline/Hendricks had four runners and three of them finished in the top 11. Kyler Marson came in fourth (18:58.87), August Dagel came in ninth (19:25.76) and Camden Hobbs finished in 11th (19:37.15). Cade Hexem was the final runner for the Redhawks and he came in 40th (21:45.34).

Deubrook Area had two runners in the race. Colton Trooien came in eighth (19:12.65) and Tyus Schulz came in 25th (20:24.15).

Tri-State’s Kaleb Foltz won the individual race with a time of 16:51.43. Great Plains Lutheran’s Sam Manian came in third (18:52.65) and Clark/Willow Lake’s Cooper Pommer (19:04.95) rounded out the top five.

Girls

Clark/Willow Lake won the team portion on the girls’ side with 25 points. Arlington came in second (32) and Sioux Valley came in third (36). Deuel finished in fourth (51).

CWL’s Kamryn Nesheim came in first with a time of 19:24.81. Kaelyn Ulschmid of Arlington came in second (19:42.86) and Deuel’s Jaycee Horuigan came in third (20:03.02). Waubay/Summit’s Madison Zirbel came in fourth (20:15.46) and Liberty Trygstad of Sioux Valley finished in fifth (20:30.88).

Arlington had two other runners in the top 11. Emarie Vincent came in ninth (21:46.32) and Madalyn Madsen came in 11th (21:51.84). Halley Miller came in 19th (22:48.35) and Seeley VanOverbeeke came in 24th (24:07.16). Addison Marone came in 29th (25:28.13) and Kashley Goebel came in 34th (27:40.44).

Sioux Valley’s Talya Vincent finished right behind Trygstad as she came in sixth (20:47.71). Ava Gatzke came in 13th (21:59.99) for the Cossacks and Quynn Nielson finished in 22nd (23:49.32).
