BRIDGEWATER – Boden Schiller scored three total touchdowns and Donovan Rose added two more touchdowns as the Sioux Valley Cossacks dominated a battle of unbeaten teams, defeating Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan 42-6 on Friday night.
The Cossacks struck early after forcing the Seahawks into a three-and-out to open the game as Brock Christopherson ripped off a 50-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. After Schiller ran in the two-point conversion, the Sioux Valley defense came up with another big play as Jacob Guthmiller’s interception led to a two-yard touchdown run by Schiller and another two-point conversion to make it 16-0.
The second quarter went back-and-forth before the Cossacks put together a late drive and Schiller capitalized by finding Hudsyn Ruesink for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 22-0 lead.
The Cossacks continued to control the game at the beginning of the third quarter, using a rushing attack that ran for 354 yards to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Schiller and another two-point conversion to make it a 30-0 game.
The Seahawks finally got on the board on Oralee Gustafson’s nine-yard touchdown pass to Taite Klumb with 3:57 to go in the third quarter but Sioux Valley responded quickly with a 47-yard touchdown run by Rose.
Skylar Trygstad came up with an interception on the following drive and it led to a 14-yard touchdown run by Rose to set up the final score.
Schiller finished with 106 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns and completed 2-of-5 passes for 23 yards and a touchdown. Rose finished with 12 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns while Christopherson had six carries for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Ruesink also finished with two catches for 23 yards in the passing game.
Trygstad and Ruesink tied for the team lead with eight tackles in the win while Schiller and Caleb Murphy each had seven tackles.
The lopsided nature of the game was surprising as both teams entered Friday night with a 4-0 record and the Cossacks ranked second in the Class 11B polls while Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan ranked third.
After improving to 5-0, Sioux Valley will look to remain undefeated when they travel to McCook Central/Montrose next Friday night.
