WAIPAHU, Hawaii — The South Dakota State soccer team came away with a win and a draw its final two games in Hawaii over the weekend.
SDSU beat California Baptist 1-0 on Friday and then played Northern Arizona to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Freshman Jenna Maloy recorded the first goal of her career in the 18th minute that ultimately was the deciding tally on Thursday, Aug. 28, as South Dakota State defeated California Baptist. SDSU’s 1-0 win over the Lancers improved the Jackrabbit soccer team to 3-1-1 overall on the season.
South Dakota State registered five shots before finding the back of the net.
Maloy had a shot in the 16th minute ahead of her notching her first collegiate goal in the 18th minute. She was assisted on the score by Hailee Christensen as the Jackrabbits went ahead 1-0.
Cal Baptist put together five shots in the first half, but just one needed saving by SDSU goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart who snagged her lone opportunity in the 34th minute.
The Jackrabbits wouldn’t allow the Lancers to produce another shot the rest of the match. SDSU eventually finished the contest with a 15-5 shot advantage, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.
SDSU is now paced through five matches in scoring by Hailee Christensen. She has eight points this season behind three goals and two assists.
Taylor Thomas was the lone non-goalkeeper to play the full 90 minutes for the Jackrabbits. The senior defender now leads SDSU in minutes played this year with 411.
Following Thomas in minutes played Thursday were Taryn Hettich (80) and Renny Buchanan (79). Alohi Ramos led the reserves in minutes played appearing on the pitch for 52 minutes.
Emma Brezenski had a team-high four shots. She was followed by Christensen (3) and Maloy (3).
WAIPAHU, Hawaii — South Dakota State sophomore Adrianne Agbayani scored an equalizing goal in the 77th minute versus Northern Arizona on Sunday, Aug. 31, to help seal a 1-1 tie between the Jackrabbits and Lumberjacks at Hawaii’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The two sides played a tight opening half of action.
NAU produced multiple shots on goal in the first 45 minutes as SDSU goalkeeper Stephanie Leckwold recorded three saves. The Lumberjacks had a narrow 5-4 edge in shots as the teams went into the second half of play.
Northern Arizona broke through in the 56th minute. Micala Boex registered an unassisted goal to put the Lumberjacks in the lead just over 10 minutes into the half.
South Dakota State started to put more runs together and wound up outshooting NAU in the second half by an 11-9 margin.
The Jackrabbits finally found the back of the net in the 77th minute. Agbayani struck a left-footed shot for a goal, her first of the season, to tie the score. Fellow sophomore Hailee Christensen was credited with an assist.
Both foes created three shots apiece in the final 13 minutes. NAU eventually ended the contest with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
South Dakota State ended its trip to Hawaii with a 3-1-2 overall record. Northern Arizona is now 2-1-2.
Leckwold eventually ended the match with five saves. That total is tied for the most by an individual keeper this season with Mallorie Benhart’s five against Kansas on Aug. 17.
Christensen has registered points in four consecutive matches. The Sioux Falls native has a team-high nine points behind three goals and three assists.
South Dakota State returns to action next week. The Jackrabbits host Oregon State at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Fishback Soccer Park as a part of the annual Hometown Heroes match.
