Jacks remain undefeated after sweeping Kansas City

OMAHA — South Dakota State volleyball improved to 21-0 on the season and 10-0 in the Summit League on Thursday with a 3-1 win over second-place Omaha at Baxter Arena. The win completes a Jackrabbit season sweep over the Mavericks.

Set scores against the Mavericks went 25-18, 12-25, 25-20, 25-16.

SDSU has a two-game lead at the top of the conference standings with six regular-season matches remaining.

Sylvie Zgonc posted her fourth straight double-double and 13th of the season. The reigning Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week tallied 13 kills and 14 digs, both team highs.

Katie Van Egdom matched her season high with nine kills for the second straight match. Madison Burr had a big night, tallying eight kills at a .250 clip to go with seven block assists and three digs. Alyssa Groves contributed six kills while hitting .313 and Annalee Ventling-Brown had five kills and five block assists.

Setters Rylee Martin and Camryn Honn combined for 36 assists, 16 digs and three aces serves. Joslyn Richardson had 13 digs and Rachel Wieber recorded 10 digs and three aces.

Omaha had the edge in nearly every major statistic, including kills (50-47), blocks (9-7) assists (48-43) and digs (66-65). The Jackrabbits hit .230 with 15 attack errors, however, compared to a .182 clip with 22 errors by the Mavericks. SDSU also had an edge - 7-5 - in aces.

In all four sets, the winning team of that set strung together a run of at least five consecutive points. With the Jacks down 5-10 in the opener, Rachel Wieber held serve for 11 straight points to flip the score in favor of the Jacks. Burr and Ventling-Brown partnered on four blocks in that stretch.

In the second set, Omaha took an 8-1 lead and stretched it to 21-8 with a 7-0 run. Down 9-12 in the third, Groves sparked a run of seven straight that ended with the Jacks in the lead, 16-12.

SDSU started the fourth set with six straight and went on to lead 9-2. From there, SDSU did not look back on its way to its 21st win of the season.

SDSU continues its roadtrip to Kansas City for a match against the Roos Saturday at 1 p.m.
