Joyce E. Doop, 89, passed away on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at the Brookings hospital surrounded by her family.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 12 to 1 p.m. at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Joyce Elaine Phelps was born on Sept.20, 1934, in Arlington, SD, the daughter of Bert and Hazel (Bergley) Phelps. She grew up in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School in 1952. Joyce was united in marriage to Richard Wayne Doop on April 30, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Arlington, SD. To this union, two children were born, Cindy “Penny” and Connie. She worked as a dental hygienist in Arlington for three years before working at the Midtech factory for 10 years. She stayed busy as a housewife, taking care of the kids and making her well know ceramics.
Joyce was very musically talented, whether if she was playing the piano, accordion or just singing. She enjoyed playing cards and working on her puzzles. Joyce also enjoyed to travel. She had such love and compassion for animals, especially dogs. Above all, Joyce loved her family. She was so loving and spent a lot of time with her family being the caregiver and proud grandma to her grandkids. Joyce was a joyful lady, always so optimistic on life.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 69 years, Richard Doop; children, Penny Berrish and Connie (Tim) Lemke; grandchildren, Brandi (Mark) Kaml, Holly Lemke, Joey Murphy, Ashley Lemke and Trey Lemke; great-grandchildren, Brittanie Reiter, D.J. Reiter, McKenna Kaml and Oakley Murphy and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Hazel (Bergley) Phelps; brothers Curtis Phelps and Jerald Phelps and her sister Vivian.
