Kenneth J. Ahartz passed away on May 3, 2025, in Brookings, South Dakota. He was born on Aug. 29, 1939, in Milbank, South Dakota, the son of George and Dorothy Ahartz. A memorial service will be held for Kenneth at 11 a.m. Tuesday May 13, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. A memorial visitation will be held the Monday May 12, from 5-7 p.m. at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Ken received his education in Revillo, SD, and was a graduate of the Revillo High School in 1957. He entered the United States Air Force in 1960 and served during the Vietnam Era until his discharge in 1982. He was united in marriage to Barbara Johnson on March 28, 1964, in Summit, SD. After serving in the military, he continued his education at SDSU and received his BS degree in economics in 1985. He was employed at Job Service in SD.
Throughout his life, Kenneth remained dedicated to his community and faith. He was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church, where he found spiritual strength and fellowship. His commitment to service extended beyond the church walls—he was an active member of the Lions Club, contributed his time and energy to Habitat for Humanity, and drove for the Volunteer Service Bank of Brookings, which reflected his deep care for others and desire to make a positive impact.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Ahartz, his two sons Michael (Lisa) Ahartz and Timothy (Leah) Ahartz, his five grandchildren Cameron Ahartz, Carson Ahartz, Caiden Ahartz, Nicole Ahartz, and Anthony Ahartz, his two great- grandchildren Brantley and Abby Ahartz, and his several nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Dorothy Ahartz, brother John Ahartz, sister DeAnn Youells, and niece Sandra Kvam (Ahartz)
