Lyle Howey Jr., 86, of Brookings, passed away on Nov. 21, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services for Lyle and his son, Robert Howey will be held together on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Burial will immediately follow the service at First Lutheran Cemetery in Brookings. A time of fellowship and a meal will follow burial, at the church. Visitation will be held the day prior, Sunday, Dec. 1, at Eidsness Funeral Home from 12 until 6 p.m.
Lyle Martin Howey Jr. was born on July 11, 1938, in Vermillion, SD, the son of Lyle and Clarinda (Kryger) Howey.
After receiving his education, Lyle went to work with his father in the concrete business, until starting his employment with Sweetman’s Concrete. Lyle was united in marriage to Barbara Johnson on June 6, 1959, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Lyle was instrumental in the completion of Interstate 29, which brought him to Aurora, SD, in 1964. In 1969, the family moved to Brookings, where Lyle was employed with Ricks Ready Mix (currently GCC Concrete) until going to work for the city of Brookings until his retirement. Barbara died on March 31, 2016.
Lyle was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and woodworking. Lyle could often be considered a “jack of all trades.” He had a love of music and dogs, and especially cherished time that he was able to spend with his family.
Lyle is survived by his children: Lyle (Dawn) Howey III, of Hartford, SD, Vicki (Richard) Tirrel, of River Falls, WI, Richard (Kay) Howey, of Brookings, SD, and Kristine (Julien) Gambs, of Humboldt, SD; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; his son, Robert “Bobby” Howey; and siblings: Cleo, Larry, Mary Jane, and Darlene.
