SIOUX FALLS — A man from Minnesota who was arrested on drug charges in Brookings is facing prison time following his sentencing by a judge on May 6 on a federal charge.
Verran Burdunice, 60, of Brooklyn Park was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, according to Tuesday news release from U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Dakota. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier after being convicted of possessing a controlled substance — roughly 212 grams of methamphetamine — with the intent to distribute.
He was indicted in June by a federal grand jury and pleaded guilty on Feb. 21.
The case against Burdunice came together after a Feb. 1, 2023, meeting in which he met with someone who, unbeknownst to him, was working with law enforcers to conduct a controlled purchase of crack cocaine from Burdunice.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Brookings Police Department.
