BROOKINGS — A man was killed in downtown Brookings on Thursday night when his car crossed Sixth Street just west of Main Avenue and struck the Foerster Beverage building behind Wells Fargo Bank.
According to information from the Brookings Police Department, Pedro Rivera Medina, a 53-year-old Brookings resident, was driving his 2019 Kia Soul west on Sixth just after 7 p.m. on Thursday night when his car crossed over the eastbound lanes of the main drag, crossed the sidewalk in front of the bank and struck the northeast corner of the longtime Foerster building.
He was removed from his car and taken by ambulance to Brookings Health System, where he died. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Downtown was blocked off for the Thursday night Downtown at Sundown event. The building suffered minor damage.
Along with the BPD, first responders at the scene included the Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
