BROOKINGS — Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have intervened in a Brookings incident on Sept. 27 that originated with a report of gunshots.

In an Oct. 2 news release, Brookings Police Chief Michael Drake said the report came at 12:07 a.m. from the area of 510 Eighth St. S., and that it was narrowed down to Lot #2 following an investigation by BPD officers.

“A check of the area resulted in officers locating bullet holes in a shed and a spent casing,” he wrote, adding that a search warrant was obtained for the property. “During the search, a handgun, ammunition, marijuana, and another spent casing were seized as a result of the warrant.”

Drake said six people were arrested for possession of marijuana, which is a Class I misdemeanor. They were:

  • Jose Francisco Mendoza Vazquez, 32
  • Juan Carlos Mendoza Vazquez, 30
  • Juan Francisco Rojas Pacheco, 21
  • Carlos S Vazquez, 19
  • Antonio Vasquez Nino, 48
  • Alejandro S Vazquez, 26

They were taken to the Brookings County Detention Center, where they remained until Sept. 29, when, according to Brookings County State’s Attorney Dan Nelson, ICE took them into custody.

It's not known which ICE facility the men were transferred to.

Nelson told the Brookings Register on Friday that the case is still under investigation.
