NISLAND —Authorities have released the names of a man who died and another who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on May 7 five miles north of Nisland.

Preliminary crash information indicates Nisland resident Darin Michael Hanson, 22, the driver of a Chevrolet S10, was traveling south on Beet Road near its intersection with Reid Road. A Dodge Dakota, driven by Joseph Lane Hanson, 24 and of Nisland, was traveling east on Reid Road, approaching Beet Road. The driver of the Dakota failed to yield, entering the intersection and was struck by the S10. Both vehicles came to rest in a drainage ditch.

Darin Hanson was ejected from his vehicle and flown to a Rapid City hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Joseph Hanson sustained fatal injuries.

Seat belts were not used, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation of the incident. All information released so far is only preliminary.
