Naomi Lavonne Boone passed away on May 4, 2025, in Brookings, SD.
A funeral service will be held for Naomi at 10 a.m. on Thursday May 8, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. A visitation will be held for Naomi on May 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.
Naomi was born on Aug. 28, 1939, at home on the farm in Clear Lake, SD, to Arthur and Florence Engelbrecht. She grew up on the farm and was baptized on Sept. 24, 1939, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, SD. Naomi was confirmed on May 16, 1954, which was the last class of Havana’s Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, SD. She attended school at District 49 a one-room school house and graduated from Clear Lake High School in May 1957.
Naomi worked for the Deuel County telephone office for one year until she married Donald B. Boone on Nov. 12, 1960, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, SD. To this union they had three beautiful daughters Beth Ellen Boone, Diane Lynn Kruse and Mona Jean Boone. After getting married they moved to Yankton for a year before moving to Tyndall, SD. In 1975, they moved to Brookings, SD, where Naomi continued her education at South Dakota State University with an associate degree in Secretarial Science. Naomi was the secretary for the Plant Science Department at SDSU. Naomi continued her employment at the Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory as an Accountant.
Naomi enjoyed quilting and quilted comforters for all of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed knitting afghans and sewing for her family. Together with Don, gardening was their passion. Both mom and dad enjoyed dancing and mother loved playing the piano. They both enjoyed antiquing and flea markets throughout the year. Getting together with friends and family to play cards was a common social event.
Naomi was a member of Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD, where she belonged to Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS).
Naomi is survived by her husband, Donald Boone; three daughters, Beth Boone, Diane Kruse and Mona Boone; four grandchildren, Brooke Kitterman, Kaitlynn Thornton (Cameron), Riley Kruse (Kaci), Allyson Kruse; seven great- grandchildren, Hadley Otten, Kennedy Miller, Carson Thornton, Odin Thornton, Beckett Thornton, Levi Thornton due in September ’25 and baby Kruse to Riley and Kaci due in December ’25.
Naomi is preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Florence Engelbrecht, Myrl and Marlene Engelbrecht, Elaine and Conrad Hanson, Dale and Ramona Engelbrecht, Lucille and Alvin Erichsen; and son-in-law Edward Tunender.
