BROOKINGS COUNTY — No injuries were reported after a pair of fires Friday afternoon in Brookings County burned more than two dozen acres of land and damaged vehicles and equipment, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The first incident was northeast of Bruce in a field on 200th Street near 468th Avenue and occurred at 2:31 p.m. when a passersby noticed smoke, then flames, in a grass field, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote.
The blaze spread quickly toward a residence and outbuildings, burning a total of 26 acres and damaged vehicles and tractors before being doused. Damage estimated are still being compiled, Sebring wrote, and the incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office.
Responding agencies were fire departments from Bruce, Estelline and Volga along with personnel from Brookings County Emergency Management.
A resident’s attempt to burn a log went awry in this incident at 4:41 p.m. at a residence southeast of Brookings on 479th Avenue near 219th Street.
The fire spread from the log into a cluster of trees, Sebring wrote, and destroyed a horse trailer before being brought under control and extinguished by the Elkton Fire Department.
Damage from the blaze was estimated at $2,000, and the sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.
