She grew up on the family farm in the valley between White and Hendricks, and enjoyed playing with her five other siblings, as well as other friends and family in the valley. She attended the valley country school house from 1st- 6th grade. When they closed the school, she transferred to Hendricks, MN for 7-9th grade. She switched to White, SD her sophomore year, but in January that year she got spinal meningitis and was hospitalized for 9 days, and spent the remainder of that year recuperating.

She was baptized May 9, 1993 where she attended Blue Ridge Baptist Church. She continued to grow in her faith and that became very important to her as she found herself a widow, on September 1st, 2003, when Bud passed away.
Phyllis moved back to Brookings where she enjoyed spending time with her sisters, having lunch and daily coffee with her apartment” family” at Heritage Estates. She as enjoyed attending Brookings Church of Christ with her family biological and spiritual.
In December 2024 as her health declined, she moved to Park Place Assisted Living and shared an adjoining apartment with her daughter Tammy, where she was able to gain more “family”, and appreciated the extra care she got there.
