BROOKINGS — Plans are being made to renovate the skateboarding area near the high school in Brookings, but the parks department wants input from the community before anything concrete happens.
To that end, the board will host a community input event.
“We’ll have pizza and refreshments for the kids and adults and skaters, so come out,” Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director Kristin Zimmerman told the Brookings Register.
The event is set for March 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the commons area at Brookings High School, 530 Elm Ave.
Other topics came up as well at Monday night’s meeting of the Brookings Park & Rec Advisory Board meeting, including:
• Zimmerman told the board the Edgebrook Golf Course water sourcing cost estimates will come in this week for the five options that are being considered. Edgebrook has had issues with its water supply for several years — with Mother Nature’s dry spells not helping matters any — so hopes are high for a solution.
• Zimmerman is hopeful a draft of the department’s summer recreation program guide will be available for the board’s March meeting.
“We’re adding pickleball programming (and) we’re partnering with the Optimist Club with the Kite Festival a little bit more in-depth there,” she pointed out.
The festival is planned at the Fishback Soccer Complex on June 14-15, according to information from Visit Brookings.
• Zimmerman said expanded programming is planned at the Larson Ice Center that involves curling, figure skating and hockey. The goal of year-round ice at the blue rink plays a key role in those plans.
• The board approved two events at Pioneer Park: The 32nd Annual Brookings Car Show and the Summer Sol Coed Volleyball Tournament.
The car show will be June 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is being put on by the Brookings Car Club. The volleyball tournament is set for June 21 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Heard about the Stormwater Incentive Program from the Sustainability Council. It involves a reimbursement for rain barrels, native planting vouchers (50% up to $500) and a rain garden reimbursement (up to $1,000).
There is also a plan to partner with the department to fund water bottle fill stations along the city’s trail system and in its parks.
• Received an update on the Brookings Activity Center’s impact on the community last year, including that it has 347 members and provided 1,110 fitness, educational and recreational classes. It also offered more than 800 hours of facility support to groups such as Farmers Market, Elks Lodge, Rotary Club and more. Lastly, BAC also, in partnership with 60s Plus Dining, provided more than 28,000 meals.
• Learned that the dedication ceremony for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Pioneer Park will be Feb. 25.
